Put the Welsh in their place on Saturday, England winning 2-0 at more or less a canter. It could have been 6 or 7 by the end...

We had every Welshman come out of the woodwork in the week prior to this game saying how they were stick it up the English. In the event, the Welsh fire never turned up.

Cracking result for the Oirish in Paris (0-0) too.

The Boys in Green should be pretty happy with the result. It puts them in a good position in their Group. Next up for them is the Faroe Islanders.

US had an easy time with El Salvador 2-0:link

One of my favorite t-shirts from the WC that year was a take off on Paul Revere and said:

"The Irish are coming!
The Irish are coming!
(The British are staying home)"

Not at all mate - I actually meant a 0-0 draw in Paris was a cracking result. I would think most countries would be happy with an away point against the French - I know I would.

Might I suggest you do away with those extra-large fries currently residing on your shoulder...?

And, in answer to your assumption - Firstly, not qualifying for USA '94 did us a massive favour - it meant no more Graham Taylor - and secondly, the vast majority of that "bunch of backward Paddy's" were hardly erm... "Irish", were they...?

My bad, the oirish thing made me think you are being a smarta$$, yes you GD i know that might come as a surprise. i thought it was good for them but i just did not think an english man would give the paddy's prop's.

Yes its true i do have fries on my shoulders, i think it comes from my mum she would not let us own reebok when i was a kid because it had the union jack on it (but she has chilled out on that kind of stuff in recent years)

To be honest i did not even follow football during that world cup, but i do know that alot of them came over for some of the games, i guess you are talking about the Irish-americans and you might be right on that one as well.

dam you GD you are making me say im sorry to an english man just do not tell mum.

Anyhoo,

The much maligned (and we're not talking about Beckham...) Michael Owen grabs the winner in faraway Azerbaijan. Whilst the conditions (at one point, the game was in danger of being called off due to 60mph winds) didn't help, I was disappointed not to see England take more control.

Don't get me wrong, I'm fully aware that England aren't going to run up cricket scores, but it'd be great to see 'em play more keep ball away from home. We give the ball away far too easily.

(Sounds like the Redskins...)

Still, three points away from home is three points, and that'll do me. It would have been great to see the Welsh take points of Poland and put us in a more commanding position in our group, but it was not to be - the Poles winning 3-2 in Cardiff...

Incidentally, for those of you who know your English footie, we got a documentary on TV over here about the great Brian Clough, who died last month.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/1576977.stm

The greatest manager never to have managed England - he was that good.

And no messing...

Good Results for my guys the English and Portuguese. Rough night in Azerbaijan last night weather wise, football was hard but great result. As for Portugal, it was a great comeback on the critics beating Russia 7-1 after dropping two points at the weekend. Also props to Robbie Keane becoming all time leading goalscorer from Eire.

The Boys in Green should have hung up more than a two-spot in that game. Hopefully it won't come down a goal difference tie breaker in the end.
