BMitch is just pumped and like the old dogs who fought back in the day, tend to be more critical, cause they're previous performances will be challenged. They also know what kind of coach the new breed is with, and just want to make sure they pick up on that. Sometimes what's in their own hearts, doesn't exactly come out right in words, because of the sentiment and emotion for coach.

They are anxious for this year's alma mata, but they hurt like we do to see those embarrasing moments.

All Portis has to do is play his game and when he faces BMitch, each time, any hostility, if at all, will disappear. CP IS A STUD and make no mistake, once again, we have a "character" at RB!

I feel a thrill!

Yeah, that was what Brian said. They played the back-and-forth between him and Portis on Sportstalk 980 and Brian was on air with them to say that he wanted Portis to step up and talk all the time. That if he wanted to be "the man" he had to be the man win or lose. Certainly Brian always backed up his junk on the field and in the locker room. Why did we ever let that guy go? He is better than Morton right now. :P

What did Mitchell win while he was here? And don't say the 92 Superbowl, as we all know his contributions were minimal as a Rookie.

Portis is on pace for the single season franchise rushing record. Mitchell is on pace for Social security. I wish they'd bring Gary Clark back to the post-game show and get Mitchell up outta there. Im trying to forget him and eery Sunday he's there to remind me of...well Him.
Why you feel the need to hate a guy who gave 100% of what he had every game and stood up for the B&G every week I don't know. The fact is, the man was likely the best player we had on some pretty poor teams. He was, up until Rice's Monday Night game, the all-time yardage leader in NFL history. The vast majority of that yardage was compiled as a Redskin. He has the record for scores as a returner. He should likely be in the HOF. In other words, whatever came out of Brian's mouth, he backed it up.

And as for Gary Clark, I don't remember him being a shrinking violet. I can vividly remember him getting right up in Gibbs' face on the sideline, something Brian certainly never did. And I love Gary Clark, too. And so did/does Gibbs. Because Gary and Brian care about what they do and go as hard as they can all the time.

If you want to hate on an old Redskin player hate Deion, who talked and never gave 100% for anybody but Deion.

I admire Mitchell's contributions on Special Teams, but I think they are overstated by fans like yourself. I don't recall Gary Clark ever trying to fight someone after the whistle blew because they put a good lick on him. I also don't remember Clark Fumbling away our playoff hopes. Sure he got in Gibbs' face because he wanted the ball. B Mitch was critical of Portis for not doing the same thing, and I think he is WAY off-base with that comment. Portis showed a tremendous amount of class (Something that both Clark and Mitchell lacked at times) by not getting in Gibbs' face when he was clearly frustrated by not getting the ball.

The truth is, Mitchell was no better than Mike Nelms, and his versatility is why he stuck around so long whereas Nelms' inability to play his position (CB) was why Nelms did not. But please, he was never the best player on any Redskins team, EVER. I'll even go as far to say he was never the best RB on a Redskins team and there is a reason he was never a starter on offense. Mitchell was an overachiever and I realize that Redskins fans love overachievers (Olkewiescz sp? and Babe Laufenberg were other fan favorites because they overachieved), but really he was nothing special.

I've already stated why I hated him. He represents to me Bad football displayed by the Redskins in the 90's, and I will never forgive his fumble in 93 and his numerous untimely fumbles that cost us winnable games during the same 90's.

I hate Deion too, but this thread was about B Mitch calling out a player whos' jock he couldn't hold as a football player. I won't stand for it and Im glad CP didn't either.

Why does Mitchell get a pass for the horrible things he said about this organization when we chose to go in another direction? That's the question I'd pose to you Mitchell fans (Spence). He was a bum who compiled stats on Special teams. Rice got all his yards on Offensen and deserves the distinction much more than Mitchell does......

I didn't state anything about his contributions on Special Teams except what is pure NFL approved stats: he is the career leader in yards from scrimmage (or was until Rice surpassed it Monday night).

WR does not require berserker mentality to play, something that returning kicks and especially punts does. And B-Mitch didn't do any fighting on the field, he jawed up in people's face masks. The difference is worth 15 yards. And Clark got in his share.

One play, boneheaded or not, does not a game make...

By the time he was engaged in breath mint testing with Gibbs, Clark had earned a certain amount of veteran leeway. Something Portis has not done on this team.

I loved Mike "I Never Fair-Catch" Nelms. He was inspiring for the same reasons Mitchell was. He was stones-out, 100% forward all the time. I would counter that his excellence at his position was the reason Mitchell stuck around so long. The man was a constant threat to score. Nelms, after a few too many blows to his somewhat more fragile physique, was not after a time. As to his being the best player on his team, it is probably safe to say that there is no reasonsable way to quantify a thing like that and that we will have to agree to disagree on our opinion on that.

In any case, you can no more discount versatility as desireable than you can say Nelms made the team as a CB. Mitchell made the team as a returner, but that he could be an emergency QB or the third down back and knew so much about every aspect of offense and all four special teams is pretty great. Brian is a very smart guy. Marshall Faulk gets a lot of props for knowing where everyone is supposed to be and for being versatile. Brian brought that intelligence to the game as well.

Again, one play. I don't remember him being a constant fumbler. In 223 games started he fumbled 46 times and lost 16 of them according to NFL stats. That amounts to losing about 1.12 balls a season, not counting his last season in New York when he didn't start. Given his consistent production and scoring threat, a lot of coaches seemed to think it was a price worth paying.

Taking the latter point first, discounting yards gained on Special Teams is, in my opinion, shortsighted. If you have never fielded punts or kicks or sprinted down a field to bust a wedge, I urge you to get the local college or high school punter to loft a few for you. When you have mastered how to catch a ball falling from that high up in a wind while running forward to meet it, try to imagine doing it with 10 guys sprinting full out towards you trying to kill you. It’s sort of like being in one of those Capital One commercials *grin*. No one takes full speed hits like returners, no one. In other words, it is as hairy-chested a way to make a living as anything short of wrestling tigers. So, in 20,000 yards or so, CP can hope to carry B-Mitch's jock. Yards he got were ones the offense didn't have to.

As to why he gets a pass for being fiery, I can only speak for myself. I loved Brian as a player to begin with. And, I hate Norv Turner for being the Pusilanimous Dallas *Censored by Spence* reject who dragged our team through the muck for seven long years. It appeared to me that Brian was a scapegoat for Norv's problems. Brian was one of the few players on the team who could produce consistently and they cut him for the reason that he spoke his mind. That seemed like cutting off your nose to spite your face to me then and it still does now. It was also a severing of one of the last ties to the old Redskins. I felt then and now that Brian had earned the right to a better exit.

I will, in my better moments, admit that if Brian were a player for another team, I would call him Kornholio. But he gave it up for the B&G for 9 years, so I give it up for him. Strangely, when Gardener does his "first-down" thing, I find that annoying. Maybe if he weren't 50/50 I'd learn to love that, too.

i have to disagree, to an extent. of course portis should WANT the ball, but he was respectful the past couple weeks when he didnt get the ball alot. he wasnt jumping up and down in gibbs face saying, "give me the ball or we will lose, you idiot!" he kept his mouth shut, respected gibbs decision. he showed he was a true team player and i applaud him for it. thats what seperates him from, lets say, a player like terell owens.

Well I was no Pro football player, but in HS I averaged about 32 yards per return on Kick Return. The key to being successful is running hard at your wedge and reading your blocks when you get there. As I said, I respect his contributions on Special Teams, but think they are overstated.

That Jerry Rice got that insane number of yards is exponetially more impressive to me because ALL of it came as a WR.

I hate Rod Gardner's first down dance as much as I hated B Mitch trying to fight everytime someone rang his bell. I also never claimed that he frequently fumbled, He just happened to fumble at the worst possible times.

Bottomline for me is that Mitchell was a loser. He was that guy you cheer for who always falls just short, just like so many of the teams he played on. I hate the way he left this team and the comments he made about the organization. His skills were declining. Do I unfairly judge B Mitch? Perhaps. I certainly don't think he has earned the right to question the heart of Clinton Portis.

You're right, Portis hasn't earned the right to jump in JJG's face, and he didn't. But according to B Mitch, his heart now is questionable because he didn't do that.

I was hoping someone would have said that by now! YEESH!! The last thing we need is a guy like TO or Moss crying b/c their # isn't being called. I HATE guys like that and Portis' team first attitude is refreshing.

Man you been racking up some good posts yourself - and I second that part of Portis being refreshing. I hope the rest of the offense sees that in him and others, who have sacrificed their big #'s for trying to be a winner!

Hail!
