Possible WR or CB Options
-- Titans Facing Tough Cap Decisions --
Sun Jan 16, 2005 --from FFMastermind.com
The Nashville Tennessean reports a Titans receiving corps without WR Derrick Mason or a secondary without CB Samari Rolle could become reality. Then shift your focus to the trenches and picture a defensive front without DE Kevin Carter or an offensive line minus OT Fred Miller. Remove S Lance Schulters and CB Andre Dyson from the mix as well, and tough-luck PK Joe Nedney, too. The Titans have imagined such scenarios, and may take steps to make them become reality. They must be under the NFL's salary cap by the first of March. Between now and then the organization will have to make some very tough decisions. Some of the upcoming changes have been discussed internally for weeks. Some big-name players are sure to be cut while others will have a chance to save themselves by restructuring their contract or taking a pay cut. Some unrestricted free agents will depart for other teams. Other players simply won't be invited back. As for the biggest question of the offseason — will QB Steve McNair return or retire? — only McNair knows the answer. The Titans are almost certain to put a younger, less experienced team on the field next season. "If we do it, it will be abrupt, it will be wholehearted, it will be painful, but it will be quick," GM Floyd Reese told the Tennessean.
Well, most likely only one of the two will be cut, as they could use the other. That being said, I see them cutting Mason over Rolle b/c Rolle is more important to the Titans defense than Mason is to the Offense (they have a knack for really good WRs, as well as a high draft pick. Bennett+Calico+Edwards would be tough to defend against).
I would love Derrick Mason, but he is basically a Coles clone. He wouldn't be too expensive, works hard, and has good hands. Decent speed and size. I say let's get him if they cut him.

if he is a coles clone then why get him...isnt that the problem we have no playmakers in the wr corp...isnt coles included in that...not that i dont like coles because i love the guy to death...im just saying...he would be an upgrade over gardner and would like to have mason with coles over coles and gardner...not sure he would be the answer though

Eh, he's 5'10'' and 190 but would be nice starting alongside of Coles. He's a bit old (8 year pro), but could be a nice role model for McCants and Jacobs, as well as if we draft a wideout in the later rounds. Here's his stats.
Year Team G GS No Yards Avg Lg TD 20+ 40+ FD
1997 Tennessee Oilers 16 2 14 186 13.3 38 0 3 0 8
1998 Tennessee Oilers 16 0 25 333 13.3 47 3 3 1 19
1999 Tennessee Titans 13 0 8 89 11.1 31 0 2 0 5
2000 Tennessee Titans 16 10 63 895 14.2 34 5 12 0 45
2001 Tennessee Titans 15 15 73 1128 15.5 71 9 19 5 50
2002 Tennessee Titans 14 14 79 1012 12.8 40 5 12 1 56
2003 Tennessee Titans 16 16 95 1303 13.7 50 8 16 3 68

Sure I'd like to have D. Mason too. A sure handed receiver with a proven track record. But I believe he'd be too expensive for the 'Skins therefore I'm not gonna entertain the thought.

Derrick Mason isn't the name that stands out to me on that list.
Kevin Carter is.

Samari Rolle is a much better corner and Kevin Carter is a super under acheiver. He had one good year with the Rams and then mailed it in.
I would not touch Carter, but Rolle is a shutdown corner.

I would take Rolle or Dyson which ever one gets released.
I still think we need to try and get something for Smoot but I am beginning to doubt that it is going to happen.

With everything said..... I would take Rolle. I bet he would take 10 mil and come BACK to Williams as a DC and hopefully future head coach. I wouldn't over look this one either.... They got a lot of roster to trim.

Now me personally, If we cant re-sign Smoot, Rolle may actually be just as good if not better at CB for us in Willliams' D.

Samari Rolle would be perfect here. Williams knows him well, so if Rolle is available and if we let go of Smoot, Rolle would be a great replacement. Kevin Carter isnt all that good guys. Hes old too. and too spiritual lol

i wouldn't mind either player but i prefer A. Dyson over S. Rolle. Dyson's 3 years younger and will come cheaper. Dyson hasn't missed a game the last 3 years while Rolle has missed 7 games the last 2. Dyson seems to be the more willing tackler (both are skinny like Smoot.. Dyson 5'10-183lbs/Rolle 6'0-175lbs) and his INT's have risen each of his 4 years. Rolle is the better blitzing corner which we know Williams likes however.
Dyson: 62 Games, 223 Tackles, 1 Sack, 16 INTs, 3 TDs, 44 Pass Defensed
Rolle: 101 Games, 299 Tackles, 8.5 Sacks, 23 INTs, 1 TD (against us on MNF no less), 66 Pass Defensed
