Top 40 Super Bowl moments: Skins' in 3 of Top 13

Riggins runs wild: (Super Bowl XVII) On fourth-and-1 at the Miami 43 in the fourth quarter, Washington quarterback Joe Theismann made the call in the huddle: "Goal line, I-left, tight wing, 70-chip on one." Moments later, John Riggins took the handoff, bowled over Dolphins cornerback Don McNeal and raced to the end zone with the go-ahead touchdown as the Redskins won, 27-17.

Quarterback audition failed: (Super Bowl VIII) The Washington Redskins blocked a fieldgoal attempt by Miami’s Garo Yepremian, and the little kicker inexplicably tried to throw a pass. His feeble toss was plucked out of the air by the Redskins’ Mike Bass and returned for a touchdown, but the Dolphins still won 14-7 to complete an undefeated season.

Second-quarter stampede: (Super Bowl XXII) Denver scored on its first play from scrimmage and had a 10-0 lead after 15 minutes against Washington. Then, the game stopped on a dime. Redskins running back Timmy Smith gained yards at will, and quarterback Doug Williams threw four TD passes in a 35-point barrage before halftime. Washington rolled to a 42-10 win.

Turnaround touchdown: (Super Bowl XVIII) Los Angeles Raiders running back Marcus Allen went off left tackle and found his path clogged with Washington defenders. He turned around, saw a hole up the middle and rocketed through it en route to a 74-yard touchdown in the Raiders’ 38-9 victory.

At least he remembered his pants: (Super Bowl XXVI) Running back Thurman Thomas missed Buffalo’s first offensive series while on the sidelines searching for his helmet. That set the tone for the game as the Washington Redskins dominated, 37-24.

Losing his helmet and missing the first series set the tone in that not much went right for Buffalo in that game.

My funniest
1. It was funny seeing Yepremian getting "mugged" just when the world was writing off the Redskins. Interesting, if Kilmer doesn't throw the pick and the pass is caught, we're in their red zone with time running out or the receiver goes in for the touchdown with only seconds remaining!
2. Commercial break! Oh what a difference a beer commercial makes! Bud Light's commercial with the Jamaican Bob Sled team or whoever goes off, and Williams ankle is shown to be ok, as he steps back into the huddle. First its the hand offs to Timmy Smith, then another, then a short pass, then boom! 35 points in the second quarter, I have my military roomies return to the barracks in outright horror! I'm richer, they're broker and instead of the John Wayne comparison of John Elway being rung in my ears from the Rocky Mountain oyster lovers, I'm hearing shouts of joy over the phone with my long distance call from D. C.!!!!
Honorable Mention: Thurmon Thomas' losing his helmet, wouldn't have made a difference, because Kurt Gouviea took on their fullback, Wilbur Marshall, Dexter, Charles, Matt Millen, Butz, Walton, Tim Johson and Geathers STUFFED his arse anyway!

So 35 points in a quarter is 13th? Interesting since it will NEVER happen again.

you mean freddie mitchell couldnt recover 5 fumbles in the end zone in a quarter? it might not be higher because it means washington dominated, and it wasnt a great superbowl unless you were a skins fan/bronco hater.

That's what I was thinking... Unbelievable. That should be Top 5.

Dude, fuh real.
The greatest offensive explosion in the biggest game in sports only makes it to number 13?!? That was arguably the greatest 15 minutes of offense ever assembled, and it happened in the Super Bowl. 13? Puh-lease... try numero uno.

Yep:
From www.nfl.com (Superbowl Recap section):
"Bills running back Thurman Thomas, who had an AFC-high 1,407 yards rushing and an NFL-best 2,038 total yards from scrimmage during the regular season, ran for only 13 yards on 10 carries and was limited to 27 yards on four receptions."

What actually set the tone was the Redskins D hammering the living poo out of Thomas and Jim Kelly. Kelly looked like he had gone 15 with the champ by the third quarter.

I never saw that loss to the Raiders, hell I wasn't even alive, but for some reason that game still hurts. Just think about our place in history had we won 4 superbowls in the 80's and back to back superbowls. Maybe more players in the hall of fame even...maybe that specific team would have been mentioned in the same breath with the Steelers of the 70's and 49ers of that very same decade. Frustrating to think about sometimes.

That's why I try not to mention it. The Skins players think it was the type of game where we came to play, things just didn't happen like they should have. The Raiders just took advantage of the opportunities more. We all knew if that team played the Skins the next day, they would be toast (Raiders), just that day, they outplayed us when it counted the most with some luck of course on their part.
