Apparently this has a lot to do with the distaste voters have for Mac's non-comments at the Congressional hearings. It probably also has a lot to do with Mac's streaky career and major accomplishments only occuring in one year spurts while, steroids or no, Bonds has been thought of as a potential Hall of Famer since breaking into the league.
I think even without the roids debate Bonds would be a shoo-in and Mac would be borderline.
In 16 seasons Mac has nearly 600 HRs (of which 500 is the key barometer) but only 1626 hits and a lifetime batting average of .263.
