Default Portis a problem?

Whispers: Portis a Problem?
By John Keim Warpath Insiders
Date: Apr 5, 2005

The Redskins' offseason manueverings haven't impressed others around the league. At least one team executive, while confident in coach Joe Gibbs, was uncertain where the Redskins were headed.

One thing he doesn't like is Clinton Portis as a teammate. Though no rumblings have come out of the Redskins' locker room about him, more than a few around the league view him as possible trouble. That hasn't happened yet, but some are waiting to see how he handles another year like last year.

Those aren't the only things some don't like.

''They've had no plan and no patience and I hear they don't have any confidence in Patrick Ramsey,'' he said. ''And they said a year ago that they had a three-year plan and now they can't even get it into Year Two. . . . The guy they brought in from Jacksonville [Bill Musgrave] is no guru. He got fired from there and he quit in Carolina and his offense was not innovative. I've got a feeling this thing isn't going right.''

. . . But don't expect the players to hang their heads after the departure of Fred Smoot. At least one defensive player liked what he saw in Garnell Wilds last season -- and this person likes Walt Harris as a starter, too.

This defender called Wilds a ''playmaker'' and was confident he could be a capable nickelback this season. That is, if the Redskins don't draft a corner.

. . . According to NFLdraftscout.com, the Redskins are interested in San Diego State outside linebacker Matt McCoy, likely in the fifth or sixth round. He's expected to visit Redskins Park soon.

portis isn't a problem, he's just a pimp. besides, portis didn't throw a huge hissy fit due to lack of offensive production and demand a trade.. that honor belongs to the lovely laveranues. besides portis managed to be the most productive player in our dreadful offense last year.. i wouldn't exactly call that a problem.

and i don't think they are asking musgrave to be the guru or innovator behind our offense. qb coach is important, but i don't see how his addition could have a negative effect?

when the comments become true then we worry. when an oustside source says portis is going to cause problems in the locker room, all they are doing is startiung rumors. Must be a denver exec.

All Ive heard is how Portis is the first in the film room and if youre late, he pulls you aside and tell you to correct your priorities. And that he helps out a lot of the young players out. Ive heard nothing but how he's the perfect teammate.

Exactly. IMO, this story is a plant, intended to stir things up so that if there are any results the reporter might actually have something to report.

I have just three questions:
A. Who is John Keim?
B. Who is John Keim?
C. Who is John Keim?

Like any Redskins front office guy would tell this to Keim, even off the record. This is crap--all of it.

Rewind to the offseason last year and you could transplant Coles name in this sentence instead of Portis. We all know what happened there - model Redskin turned evil bastard when no one expected it. I can things with Portis getting ugly next offseason if the offense doesn't improve over this past season and it doesn't seem that far fetched to me of a possible reality in the realm of all possibilities. The futures uncertain but I believe if the Line is healthy, Portis scores more TD's then last season, and Ramsey has a good year which results in more then 6 wins this possibiliy is as likely as me winning the lottery, not going to happen.

Coles was never a model Redskin. he was unhappy with the coaching change from Day 1. He may of never missed a workout but he was not the type of player that tried to get others into the workouts. He was not calling Joe in the offseason encouraging him to get players. Portis is a team guy who has alot of pride and wants to do better next season. I will take him.

most of their argument was based on us having another poor year.
Portis wiil eat up at least 1500 on the ground and will probably be pushing 2000 all purpose yards....12-16 TDs......I think he will be very satisfied with where he and the Redskins are at or should I say headed.

Really? I find this hard to believe that you honestly felt this way a year ago. Could you tell in your crystal ball that Coles wasn't a "core redskin" when the rest of us were completely fooled by his trade demand announcement? Let me know if you saw this back then because I could use some stock advice from a future teller
