A memory for the benefit of our younger fans
Since we're still a couple weeks out and over the past couple months there's been a few post to the effect of "so what was it like at RFK?", "How good was Riggins...who's he like in todays game?", etc. One memory that I have is indelible. I'm curious if others were there and what their recollections are.
The moment I'm referring to is the Super Bowl XVII victory parade downtown. To give you guys a feel for how this city responds to the 'skins (back in the day) the parade was scheduled for a weekday and my High School (Jefferson) basically announced liberal leave for anyone who wanted to go downtown for the parade. In retrospect, I'm sure having our marching band in the parade probably made the decision easier, but it's still remarkable. So we headed down there on the metro and keep in mind folks it's January (or the very beginning of February) and it's raining cats and dogs. It was a mob scene down there. Most of the bands cancelled and the players were loaded into a few cars and buses. It didn't matter. The memory is priceless. Was anyone else there? Can you describe the scene? This city basically shutdown for the Redskins...hard to imagine now, but true.

I obviously wasn't there but I have video of the parade. There must of been hundreds of thousands on the streets. People were hanging of everything, every lampost had someone hanging from it. Joe Gibbs pays tribute to the fans, calling them "the greatest fans in the world for coming out on a day like this."

I was too young, but I will NOT miss the next one if I am lucky enough to have it happen in my life time.
Thanks for sharing BW!

I was only 14, so I couldn't skip school to make the parade. I remember crowding around a radio at lunch trying to listen to it.

That's what was so weird, our school basically said "if you're going to the parade we don't need a note...have a great time!"
I also should have mentioned that I was soaked head to toe like pretty much everyone. But no one was leaving.

i was only 10 when the redskins killed buffalo in SB XXVI, but i do remember recording the in living color skits they had during halftime. i remember jumping for joy when the game was finally over. i remember going with my dad to buy those commerative SB coca-cola cans. i also remember the mob scene at the parade in DC. we had a pretty good view too. i just cant wait to have more memories that i can recall clearly......but i at least have those memories to hold on to until then.

I was there. I was working at Farragut square at that time. A bunch of us left the office to watch the parade. I do remember the weather was horrible, but that didn't diminish the electricity.
At the time, the Redskins had not won anything for a long, long time. It was kind of like today. We came out of nowhere and won the Super Bowl. Hopefully, history will repeat itself.

Thanks for the memories, BandWagon. I swear reading this thread almost brought a tear to my eye. I really want to see this team win, we deserve it more than anybody!

I went to the parade after SB XXII, and it was awesome. My mom let me and my older brother play hookie from school, only to run into my brother's teacher on the Metro!! We all had a good laugh and celebrated together.

I went to 2 out of 3 of the Super Bowl Parades...(I figured Hubbo had had his face rubbed in the Buffalo loss enough without me going off to the parade...)
I loved riding the Metro with all of the other fans, but the parade for SB XXII was kinda scary...I had to help save this women who was about to be trampled when the crowd started running to see Gibbs give his speech. I just remember being wedged in the crowd and having to fight off perverts...won't go into details...but I did see the players hanging out of the buses and I did see Gibbs give his speech...it was great...but I don't think I'd ever go again

I remember it well. I was 15 and Montgomery County also gave us the day off. We took the subway which was so packed, people were jumping the turnstyles.
It was a rainy nasty day, they were supposed to have individual cars, I believe, we waited for a long time and only one of the designated Redskin cars came past (Stuart Anderson).
Then the two buses came by, there was very little crowd control and me and my friends ran along side the bus for 2 blocks. We saw the players and one of them was holding the trophy.
It was amazing. Thanks for bringing up the memory.
