His '05 salary was 540K...so since players are paid by the week, wouldn't they technically save 400K?

You're right that we wouldn't have to pay him the remainder of the salary he is owned this year, but as far as cap savings, his number is goes from $5.54 (what is currently anticipated that he will count this year) to $5.10 (his prorated bonus for this year).
btw, his cap number is broken down this way:
$5.10 (signing bonus) + $0.54 (salary) - $0.10 (some sort of cap credit we received this year (I dont know what it's for)).

PA Skins Girl, wouldn't the cap numbers be something more like this:
LaVar's Contract: 8 years/$67.72M/$15.5M SB/$6.5M RB in 2006/$1.95M RB in 2007/$3.05M RB in 2008/$3.7M RB in 2009/$5.4M RB in 2010/$6M RB in 2011/ $95K CC in 2005-2009
Salary for 2005 = $540k
Cap Reduction = $95k
Signing Bonus (per year) = 15.5M / 8yrs = $1.93M
Assuming that the signing bonus can't be split and traded team would take on the salary:
Trade cost to cap = $15.5 - $1.93 - $0.54 - $0.095 = 12.935M
If it could be split:
2005 Trade Cost = ($15.5 -$1.93)/2 - $0.54 - $0.095 = 6.15M
2006 Dead Cap = 6.785M
Either way, we can't trade LaVar for cap reasons....

It's not that simple for several reasons:
1) The $15.5 million in signing bonus Lavar received at the end of 2003 could only be spread over 6 years, not the full 8 years of his extension. So, it was spread at $2.58 M/year from 2004-2009.
2) Lavar's original prorated $10.75 million signing bonus still counts through 2006.
3) Lavar converted $5.5 million in salary to bonus in 2003.
So, up until 2006, his bonuses count $5.10 million/year. From 2007-2009, it drops to $2.58 million/year.
Also, when a player is released after June 1, it remaining bonus is not split equally between the two years. See previous post for how it is split.

Someone on espn today said Chicago should trade Urlacher for Ram and LaVar. Doesn't sound like a good trade to me.

That would be a horrible trade. I don't like Urlacher and think Lavar is far more talented than him. Urlacher just hits hard and is nasty.

he and Lavar are about the same size, but Lavar is faster, or was faster. they've both had injuries, so Lavar is probably still faster. but Urlacher plays middle linebacker, so that would mean Marshall could move back to the outside and Holdman could be the primary backup. anyways, i'd rather get a corner or defensive end or tackle in a trade.
we should trade Ramsey for Urlacher and start Washington, Urlacher and Arrington.

They also have outside containment. It's a bit more complicated. Sometimes DE's are forced into coverage, but that shouldn't be a problem for him. I wonder if he has no more explosiveness.

We wont trade for anyone...and i dont think this team will as long as Gibbs is the coach and G williams are here. They believe that you have to know the system pretty well to start in it. So i gurantee even if we do trade for someone that person will not be starting for a while.

I'd rather not have Urlacher. Our middle linebacker has to be one of the smartest guys on the team, basically an assistant coach.
