Default hard hitting during practice

How do you guys really feel about hitting hard in camp? Coach Spurrier said that he does not believe in that and he never will. He said that the hard hits should be saved for the opponent.
Seems like to me that you have top start to hit in camp and it bleeds over into the regular season.
We don't want a soft team but one that is known to knock the blocks off with thunderous hits.
With this said, I kinda dissagree with Ballcoaches assesment of this.

The few times that someone has received a big hit, you could see in his face that he did not approve of it.

Nobody like's to get hit, even football players (Ray Lewis aside). In a perfect Offensive player's practice (coaches included) - nobody gets tackled and the ball never touches the ground. The defense is reality. As far as Coach Spurrier goes- He's come to realise how a player or two's health can change the fortune of the entire team. His success and legacy are riding on a tenuous string...maybe a hamstring!

I can understand it. There's the theory that if you start hitting big in practice it'll translate into big hits in games, but on the other hand, there's the theory that keeping a rein on your players in practice will let them unleash some pent-up aggressiveness in games.

I think what Spurrier worries about most is injuries. Sure, we all give kudos to Bowen for "setting the tone" with that hit of his. But if Trung had broken his leg or torn his ACL or something like that, we'd be pretty damn pissed and agreeing with SS.

Well said Joe.

Kinda the damn if you do, damn if you don't......I like the hard hitting in camp. At the same time if Trung had hurt himself I'd be pissed.....

I support it. Teaches the guys to hit hard and teaches offensive guys to take hits, its reality!

I think the hard hitting is necessary. These are big league players. I can remember back a few years back when Coach Turner was basically against hard hitting and it was said that the Skins was soft.
Everyone was cryin that we needed to be more physical and then when Coach Shottenhimer came, it was a different. He encouraged hard work and hard hitting. You could immediately see the difference in our team.
I'm not sure what to expect here.

I agree with Penn's and Shabba's points on the matter.

In the league where you "play for pay" you had better learn to take somne hits anytime! And you better learn to control yourself in practice.

Nuff said !

You play how you practice, I have no problem with it. Of course, I'm not out there either.

Dont players also get hurt from stopping themselves from making a big hits. Hopefully Matt Bowen will deliver some of those hits during the season.

I like hard hitting and agree that they get paid to hit or be hit--even in practice. But only if the coach unleashes them during practice. No cheap or revenge shots. I don't know for sure, but was Trung expecting contact like that? To me, if he was expecting safeties to lower their shoulders, then I'm sure he would have done the same. I loved Bowen's hit, but I think the drill was supposed to be run at half-speed. So to answer the question, yes, hit away, so we can prepare to physically dominate opponents. But let everyone know that they will be going at full-speed with full contact. I'd like to see Trung lower his shoulder the next time Bowen squares up on him.
