Something I found that says the same thing I was saying about the exclusive franchise tagged players and not being able to negotiate with them but also brings up the rule that you get 2 first rounders that you mentioned, Akh...

Quote:
NFL Franchised Players (2005)
The following players have been hit with the "franchise" designation by their parent teams. Franchise players must be paid the average of the top five salaries at their position or 20 percent more than their 2004 salary, whichever is higher. A team can only have only player designated as a franchise player. A franchise player can be either "exclusive" or "non-exclusive". An exclusive player is not allowed to talk to any other team and is stuck with the team that franchised them. A non-exclusive player can negotiate with other teams, but the original franchise has the right of first refusal on any offer sheet signed with another team. Moreover, if the original franchise chooses not to match the offer sheet, the new team must forfeit TWO first round draft choices. It's similar to the old "Plan A" free agency system from the 1980s (i.e. Wilbur Marshall going from the Bears to the Redskins in 1988, with Chicago receiving Washington's first round picks in 1988 and 1989).

Ok:
The exclusive rights tags is the average of the top five salaries as of April 16th of the year they are tagged. So the exclusive tag, I believe, cannot be applied until after that date.
The regular franchise tag doesn't preclude the player from talking to interested teams, since the tagging team has 7 days to match the contract offer from the interested team. An "exclusive rights Franchise tag" prevents the player from talking to other teams without the permission of the team.
Obviously, a restricted or unrestricted free agent has no such boundaries from talking to other teams when free agency begins.

I am begging the Redskins FO not to make this move. We don't need an over the hill injury prone MLB when we have Lemar Marshall playing great last year.

There are two reasons that this move could be made.

1. The Redskins are planning to switch to a 3-, and that will not happen.

2. The Redskins are planning to trade Lavar and then move Lemar over to outside LB. This one is possible, but I don't see the Skins making the move.

We have more depth at OLB than in MLB. You have to expect that Lewis will go down for at least a couple of weeks. And there are cheaper options at OLB in the FA than an expensive MLB that is over the hill.

I understand that and I really don't support this move. I think if it were to be done those would be teh reasons. If we have a problem paying LaVar the money we do and for the "lack of production", Ray Lewis doesn't seem like a change. LaVar is younger and to me that would be the trade off.

Wow, so many rumours floating around about us attempting to acquire top dollar players from other teams. what is going on? This is so opposite to almost every report about our team's salary cap situation. Are we somehow going to have 10 mil in cap room that we don't know about? I don't see how us we could legitimately be thinking about Abraham/Ray-ray. Either there are some really, really confused cap "experts" in the media (not much of a stretch, really, more of a given) or Dan the Man is confident the CBA will get done. I just don't understand how the entire media world could be so off base that we're going after super high-priced players while they're expecting us to be cutting starters and playing undrafted rookies. Something really strange is going on.

Now that is entertainment, I wish I could have been there to see that play out.

honestly i love ray lewis. i know everyone on this board hates him, but me being a linebacker he is my favorite linebacker in the nfl. i really doubt that this rumor is true... but if it is i'd wet myself, change my pants, and wet myself again.

No more bringing in old guys at the tail end of their carrer. I'm glad we didn't get him/it's not true.

Interesting take on it. I would think that if ST comes back then we would easily have teh most intimidating defense in NFL.

if we get Ray i hope we can also get their stats guy who gives him credit for every tackle made within 10 yards of him.

by the way, based on this quote:

However, we're told that the Redskins previously have made a significant offer for Lewis -- and that the Ravens declined.

i don't believe it anyway.

Now lets be honest, if we got ray lewis and he picked off two interceptions against dallas or phillyfor winning touchdowns...we'd all fall in love with ray ray....so lets calm down whether thisis a rumor or not...the fans reaction in the offseason is totally different from the actuall season....

ie...everyone was pissed when we picked up Jason Campbell...(but me...but then after we saw the play of ramsey and learned how Jason is working hard and is almost ready...we all got excited.

So lets just calm down...if any one can come in and help us win..regardless of his past as long as he follows the rules of Joe without being a negative prescence off the field and on without hurting our cap..then I'm for it...if joe says we can do it..we can do it.
