Default Looking Back...

you gotta say drafting Carlos Rogers over Mike Williams is looking pretty good. As I was searching around the internet I came across some news clips on Mike Williams. Forget the fact that he did close to nothing last year, 14 games 29 rec, 350 yards and 1 TD, but it seems like this guy has some maturity issues as well. I'll be the first to admit, I wanted Mike Williams with 9th overall pick in the 2005 draft, but Joe Gibbs and Gregg Williams saw something in Rogers and went with him. I'd say we made the right pick. I see Rogers being in our defensive backfield for a long time. With Rogers, Taylor and now AA back there, that unit looks darn good for a while. Mike Williams on the other hand is now practicing with the Lions THIRD team offense and recently GM Matt Millen personally sent Williams home.

I guess my biggest point in all of this is Joe Gibbs and selecting character guys who want to work hard and play for the Redskins. It started when Gibbs came back. Hall of Fame coaches don't have to earn the respect of the players, the players have to earn the respect of a HOF coach and this team picked up on that quick and the results have shown throughout the whole organization. Look at Clinton Portis, Chris Samuels, Jon Jansen, Mark Brunell and Marcus Washington. Look at the off season aquistions this year. Randle El, Lloyd, Carter and Archuleta. All these guys are character guys. They all spoke very well at their respective press conferences and they all want to win. Look at Rocky McIntosh, comes from a military family, smart and athletic. This was no mistake jumping up and getting this guy. Some would say Sean Taylor might be a miss in all of this characterwise, but from everything I have seen this off-season and listening to him talk with Larry Michaels, he seems to have gotten straightened out. And even if you did have a problem with ST, look who we would have drafted...Kellen Winslow and look how that has turned out.

I have never been prouder to be a Washington Redskins fan than I am right now. From Snyder learning to let Gibbs make the football decisions, to Gregg Williams, to Al Saunders...these guys could be head coaches in this league but want to be here because something special is brewing. I think us here at HailRedskins.com feel it. Thanks for letting me vent my feelings.

Hail To The Redskins!

good stuff. well put.

i just think it is too soon to write off mike williams.. they need to find out how to best use him, but i had not heard anything about his habits or problems off the field until now..

on the other hand, i have nothing but great feelings about rogers.. he will be solid for years, barring injuries..

I was upset for a minute at picking Rogers but I totally understood the pick and got over it quickly. I thought he was the best CB coming out in the draft that year. He was needed as a less expensive and potentially more talented replacement for Smoot. Right now I don't see Mike Williams thriving in Detroit, as long as Mike Martz in the offensive coordinator. He just doesn't fit that scheme, IMO. But remember, many WRs start off their careers putting up moderate numbers and then blossom in their third or fourth year. Look at Joe Horn, Santana Moss, Javon Walker, just to name a few. But I definitely see your point and I agree with you.

Here a few things going on with Mike Williams of late:

WR Mike Williams was held out of practice Friday for disciplinary reasons.
"I excused him on a team issue," head coach Rod Marinelli said. "That's how I'm going to leave it." Williams was disciplined as a rookie by then-head coach Steve Mariucci for showing up late to team meetings. Williams hasn't been running among the top three receivers in Detroit so far this offseason.

WR Mike Williams reportedly violated a unknown team rule last week.
The former first-round pick was held out of practice Friday but is expected to return next week. He's also suffering from a minor injury. No details are available.

http://www.mlive.com/lions/stories/i...740.xml&coll=1

OC Mike Martz says he hasn't seen Mike Williams in "about six weeks."
"I just haven't seen him for about six weeks. He's been injured or whatever." Either Mike is going "Mad" again or we're not clued in to what's going on with Williams; Martz complimented the 2005 first-rounder's speed and quickness Thursday.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports Mike Williams is currently working with the Lions' third-team offense.
We assume he replaced Charlie Rogers. The Lions are reportedly impressed with Eddie Drummond enough to bump him up to the second-team.

Mike Williams was disciplined last week because he skipped a treatment for his injured hamstring and showed up late to a meeting.
GM Matt Millen personally sent Williams home. "I've been here for the offseason and working out," the disappointing former first-round pick said. "Last week is not going to overshadow this offseason for me." The Lions can't cut Williams without taking nearly a $12 million cap hit.

And here is an article from nfl.com on Mike Williams and Matt Jones going in two different directions.

http://www.nfl.com/nflnetwork/story/9485316

Like I said, I'm pretty happy with the Rogers pick and now with Moss, ARE and Lloyd I think we did pretty good in the WR department.

I agree that sometimes it takes a while for WR to mature into the star he should be, but this guy doesn't seem to want to put the work in to get there, which was my whole pont on character.

There are only two things I like in redundant motion, one's in the bedroom, and the other is my account going upwards!

Let's all here it for Mike gang and throw him a big kiss

Like Shally said I wouldnt write him off yet. I mean lots of young players these days have maturity problems.Look in our defensive secondary. We have one with maturity problems as well. Is anyone writing him off yet? Taylor had a good season but far from the pro bowl numbers we want.So its way too early to write him off at this point.

Yah but he better get some continuity on his B-attitudes! Those little farting arounds he's doing is making a big stink!

thank you for the added info.... damn shame as it sounds like he is being foolish.. you would think it would be ideal for him to play in martz offense..

agreed about that. supposedly, he was way too heavy last year.. being out of shape is simply inexcusable..

he needs to get his act together, but i still think he has a salvageable career
as of now..

Honestly, I have a theory that sometimes where you go (coaching staff, teammmates, etc) plays a very large role in how successful you are. We all know GW's track record for defense (especially larger CBs), but I have every feeling in the world that had we drafted Mike Williams, he'd be ready to play in this offense. The Lions were in a state of dissaray and probably still are. It is not an environment conducive to success IMO.

I agree,
Some players need to be motivated and pushed, but you would think getting paid millions of dollars would do that. This coaching staff knows how to get the best out of their players, and bring a winning tradition. I think if Mike Williams was placed in a discipline and winning environment, he would be an entirely different person, and player.

I agree that environment has something to do with it, but you have to be accountable for your own actions. If you wanna be great it doesn't just happen because you want to be great, you have to work for it. Being late to meetings and being out of shape is not acceptable.

Mike Williams reminds me of Ray Carruth, I think with what we've seen of him so far it is reasonable to assume he'll follow a similar path.

oh yeah OJ too....
