This is terrible news, I always feel so sorry for the family when something tragic like this happens. I'm thinking about his children right now and the fact that his son will have to grow up without really knowing him. My thoughts and prayers are with Terry and those kids, RIP Steve, America sure did love you!!

He died doing what he loved, I don't think he would have had it any other way.

Apparently it's very rare for someone to die from a stingray sting. He only died because he was stung through the heart.
RIP Steve

I was reading that there have only ever been 17 reported deaths from a stingray. With all the crazy stuff Irwin did with croc's, venemous snakes and whatever else, he ends getting killed by one of his least dangerous subjects.

What a shame. I liked him because he got famous by being himself. He hammed it up, but for the most part it wasn't an act. He seemed like a real good guy. I feel for his wife and children.

This is true.
About 15 years ago,my cousin and I were hydrosliding/waterskiing in the Fla.Keys.On one ride as he wiped out,he was stung by a stingray. The poison from the ray made him violently ill for about 36-48 hours. It was like a severe form of the flu.He thought he was dying, but after the poison ran it's course,he was fine.
To my knowledge, you'd have to land on them, because the barb is a defense mechanism.

It really upset everyone in our house. To get stung in the chest by a stingray, what are the odds?

Shocking and sad. In his love for animals he showed his passion and was an influential conservationist. Watching Crocodile Hunter will never be the same.

This is the guy who once held up a Taipan in each hand(the world's deadliest snake) and he gets killed by a freak stringray attack? Wow. RIP.

My deepest condolences to the family. There is no better way, if you leave this life, than going out doing what you love.

I just read in the Sydney newspaper that Steve's death is having a huge impact on his younger fan base (kids). I had no idea little kids loved this guy so much! Sad.
