cincy signs geathers to an extension
just saw that cincy had signed DE geathers to an extension.. so what ?
well, this just might mean that they have decided to re-sign geathers and not justin smith.. smith is a free agent to be and i think he would be a terrific addition to play opposite of carter.. solid player. very good against the run and decent against the pass. very solid player in that he does not miss games or take off plays. signing him would give the skins more options with their #1 pick... it would not preclude the skins taking another Def lineman in round 1...

My only concern with Smith is that he's never really gotten better over the course of his career. He's always been solid, but he doesn't show any signs of breaking out and turning into the player they thought they were getting when he was drafted in the top 10. It might be in part Cincy's fault for never putting any quality DTs in the middle of their defensive line, but still, all things considered, I think Smith should be better.

depends what you mean by "better"... he will never be a top tier pass rusher.
but he plays the run very well and shows up to play with intensity every week.
i think he is a better, younger version of wynn. and he has his moments when he can sack the qb.. he had about 6 or 7 this year when i last checked..
he would seem to be ideal for a GW defense that works to stop the run first.
and with a guy like branch added to the middle of the skins line, who knows what he could do from the edge ? even a guy like the fellow from the raiders could be plugged in there as well and create a very solid def line
upgrading the def line is job 1 this off season and smith would be a big part of it..

When I mean better I mean that he has the physical ability (along with the high draft status of Peppers and Seymour) to enter the group of elite DEs like Strahan, Peppers, Taylor, and Seymour that affect and impact all aspects of the game when they're on the field. He's pretty much stagnated throughout his career in the 65 tackles, 7 sacks, 1 FF category for his whole career. He's never played for a top defense, been on several bad ones that got run over for 16 games. A very good Dlineman makes the players around him better, but he doesn't. It's a solid career so far, but those are my red flags for him.
But don't get me wrong, shally, if the Skins can add him at a modest price he'd be a fair addition especially if they focus the draft elsewhere and sign an impact player in the back 7, but I wouldn't expect him to suddenly break out and become great, and half expect him to regress once he gets a signing bonus.

i think the worst case scenario (barring injury) is a solid, workmanlike effort every week. he would stop the bleeding in the run game and with the right crew around him, i think he would be effective, if not dynamic

I would much rather go after Jamaal Anderson in the draft. He should be there at 6. And i think he has a huge upside. This was only his 2nd year as a DE. Originally he was a WR when he first started as a freshman.

i saw geathers extension and thought the same thing but if they draft him then they still should draft alan branch just imagine this line
smith, branch, griffin(healthy),carter and then monty, golston, wynn, and evans as our backups. that would be awesome.

If Justin Smith is signed, then ideally you would want to trade down a bit and pick up a 2nd and then draft (a)dt okoye and either mlb with 2nd, or (b) mlb willis and s/cb/bpa I like andersons potential though. Go Skins !!

I'm taking this signing as hopefully the FO will see that if the Bengals don't want him, we shouldn't go after him. I wouldn't be upset if we do but you've got to wonder why Cincy doesn't want to keep him. Plus I think we could easily get an impact DE from the draft as well as an extra pick (maybe two depending on the desperation of a team for Calvin Johnson or Alan Branch). I'm still going with either:
1) Trading with NE if Calvin Johnson is available -- draft Tank Tyler, DT and MLB Willis (if available otherwise get Poszylusy) while still getting to keep our own 3rd (NE will take care of the Broncs trade for us)
Or
2) Trade down two or three spots, get DE Anderson and a 2nd to be used at MLB/CB

Shally,
Why do you think this might be an "either or" situation? Couldn't they keep both?

I have no interest in Smith considering I think he will get a decent contract. Smith is a nice player, but we need someone who can go get the QB.

not to be off topic, but is this geathers related in any way to our very own geathers of '92?

of course they could sign both.. but on the cincy depth chart both are listed at the same position.. how many times do you see teams signing 2 players for the same position to large extensions ?
