He really struggled in the early part of the season and didn't have the same impact as he did in 2005. Now with a season of Saunders under his belt, I think he'll top his '05 numbers.

Lock him up during the season or pay the consequences Danny...
He is worth it, and everyone knows that's not just an opinion.
If he wants 15-16 mill guaranteed, budget it into our cap, whatever it takes...plus, he's ALREADY JC's favorite target.

yeah but denver has been desparate for a tightend for a long time. i also agree that graham is way overpaid. but hey, it seems only a few teams have top notch pass catching tight ends, and we are one of them, the teams that dont are looking for one. i say pay him what it takes to get it done.

If he is not signed to an extension before the start of the regular season then I would puty him at a 3-1 odds of resigning with us. That goes up to 10-1 at the end of the season. 20-1 if it gets to FA next year.
Whatever the reason we do not do a good job of signing our homegrown talent onto an extension before the end of the contract year. 2 exceptions were Betts last year and Lavar in 2003. Lavar's extension did not work oout so well and Betts is a backup RB who put an emphasis on staying here instead of chasing a starting job.
But the list goes on of the FAs that moved on to greener ($$) pastures. Smoot, Pierce, Clark, Dockery, Bailey all ended up moving on after their contract expired one way opr another.
The good news is that despite some massive $$ Cooley can and should be franchised next year if things dont go well.

worse case scenario he can be franchised and then a long term deal reached.. but it will be cheaper, FAR CHEAPER to do it now

didn't we give up draft picks or trade some to move up? If he is gone next year then it's another check mark in the we need a gm column.
If he finds one of those dockery deals thou, it's been nice.

Count Samuels, Jansen and Sellers on the guys who have been locked up long term.

I was about to point those out, especially Samuels and Jansen, who were both extended the first time, during their final season under contract.
I'll go on the record right now in saying that Cooley will get a new deal before the season starts or during this season at the latest. My opinion, of course.

Actually that would be a pretty good scenario..worst case scenario is that he gets franchised and leaves the following year (or demands a trade, a la Briggs).

And those are examples of how we need to do it. Those extensions were done well in advance of their free agency date. I think mid season on their last year or beforte. We end the season without a contract for Cooley and it aint a good thing.

Any other reason why we would have cut Patten now??? I think it's cause we've got a deal in place with Cooley... which will get annouced 10 days after it's been signed. Like all the other signings this offseason.

Betts, Portis, Moss (granted Portis and Moss were first deals with Washington)...
IMO the guys we lost were NOT worth the money they got in FA, and I'm glad they are gone.
