i think next year is the year they put an emphasis on infusing some longterm talent on the dline. maybe they felt what they were looking for just wasnt there this year. or perhaps looking to pick up one of these tagged DEs from this year in free agency next year provided they play under the tag and dont get signed longterm or tagged again next year (ie- dwight freeney)

Could be, or GW invents the new 0,5,6 defense, and no longer need DL.

Why not? We were playing the 5-6 last year with our secondary playing like LBs that can't tackle and a LB that's always trying to get in on the rush way too late....

So what does the forum thing about the article Johnny Clayton just wrote? Here's the part about us:
Quote:
Can another safety help the pass rush?
Joe Gibbs thought LaRon Landry was the best defensive player in the draft, so he made him the sixth pick after repeated efforts to trade down. Now the Redskins have two of the most talented safeties in the league -- Landry and Sean Taylor, both No. 6 picks. The problem is the Redskins passed over a pass-rusher, Jamaal Anderson, to take Landry. The Redskins are calling all around to see if a veteran pass-rusher is available. The Redskins had only 19 sacks last season. Without any pressure on the quarterback, opponents had a 97.8 quarterback rating against them. Unless the Redskins can find a way to get a pass rush, Landy and Taylor might get a lot of opportunities to get tackles downfield.

The bolded part somewhat surprised/intrigued me... are we really looking to trade for someone at DE/DT???

i guess it will depend upon further losses from FA.. considering that we have focused on defense since gibbs came here, i would expect more of the same barring injuries.. the d line is the primary need as of now

hicks ?? likely too old and just a 1 year fix.. someone like schobel or
alex brown would be ideal but would involve draft picks

I'd be fine with a fair deal.... the Redskins don't owe the fans honesty at the expense of leverage.

I wasn't worried about us not knowing or being told "we're fine with our DLine"... I was more interested in the WHO?
Schobel, like Shally said, is an interesting guy and same with the Burgess situation in Oakland. Anyone else we should be watching???

Some of these later posts have cracked me up to the point where I am almost not angry about the D line.....almost.
I will just say that Flave has pretty much expressed my position to the point, and I have yet to see a decent counter argument grounded in facts and trends rather than wishful/hopeful trust in the coaches mantra.

I think the FO would trade a third or less for the right FA, but no higher. The question is whether that will be good enough.
Wynn has re-structured for ($875k?) - can't they still drop him on 1 June?

The only decent argument grounded in stats is the DIP one, but I would really want to see it applied to all 32 defenses, and see how it correlates to their win/loss record before I hold it up as the definitive indicator. It is interesting, however.

He got a signing bonus... he's staying AT LEAST this year. Next year, he'll be off the books completely.
