detroit pulled a gibbs
just watched the replay of the detroit-minnesota game on nfl network. in overtime, 1st down, they kicked the winning field goal to clinch the game instead of going for the td.
i find it interesting, but not surprising, that no one seems to be making a big deal out of detroit's decision to follow gibbs' footsteps. then again, it's always the trend setter that grabs the attention, not those who imitate.

I said from the get go that as long as you have absolute confidence in your kicker, it is the right call.

How far was the kick? Was it a 40 yarder?

Im not so sure id call it a Gibbs call. Ive seen this done plenty of times over the years.

Perhaps over the years. But I think Panthro meant this year. [of course]
I'm not sure how long Detroits FG was, but I bet it wasn't 40 yards +. Which will set Gibbs apart from the rest.
OMT, I can't remember ever seeing a team attempt a FG on first down. Especially from 40 yards out.

It was a 37 yard kick and their kicker is a borderline hall of famer. It was also in a dome. I don't see the similarity.

I think that many, if not most, didn't understand why Gibbs didn't try to get closer for a FG attempt, not necessarily why he didn't go for a TD.

That same kicker also missed a kick that could've sealed it in regulation.

From 52 yards. And he hit the upright.

According to the official play by play, Suishams kicked a 39 yard FG. Ball was snapped from the 22 yard line.
Hanson's kicked a 37 yard FG. Ball was snapped from the 19 yard line.
A difference of two yards and a roof.

Hanson is a very good kicker and that is what makes this a no-brainer.

Ryan Longwell, the Vikings kicker missed the 52 yarder that hit the upright.
Hanson missed a 48 yarder that went wide right.
