AP: Redskins' offense back to square one: 'We're starting a whole new year'
Quote:
Joe Gibbs is starting over in the middle of the season -- for the second year in a row.
Wednesday was shake-up day for the languid Washington Redskins offense, ranked 28th in the league and ineffective on all fronts. The personnel was the same, but the practice was more physical and the emphasis renewed on streamlining the attack back into the traditional Gibbs mold.
"We're starting a whole new year today offensively," quarterback Jason Campbell said. "We've put everything behind us in the past, and we're starting from scratch again."
|
Quote:
This year's midseason wake-up call is offense-only; the defense had been playing well until the loss to the Patriots. Receiver Antwaan Randle El was one of the leaders of the players' meeting, along with kick returner Rock Cartwright, left tackle Chris Samuels, Campbell and others.
"We told each other we've got to hold each other accountable," Cartwright said. "Regardless of what play's called, we've got to run that play to the best of our ability. And if you don't like the play call, so what? You've got 10 other guys depending on you."
|
Quote:
The weak running game is particularly embarrassing for Gibbs and his brain trust of experienced assistants.
"That's not us. We didn't come back to put up with that kind of stuff," Bugel said. "We'll solve the problem. We need cooperation from everybody, and the guys who don't want to cooperate won't play. It's real simple. We're going to do it this way or Trailway. Make up your mind."
|
Quote:
"It's not time to surrender," Wade said. "We have a lot of games left, and we can really make something great out of it."
Coincidentally, a load of black T-shirts arrived Wednesday with burgundy and gold lettering that read: "When you are winning, fight like you are losing." Cartwright ordered them back when the main concern was blown second-half leads, but the players were eagerly putting on the shirts and soaking up the message.
"That got here at the perfect time," Cartwright said.

I have a bit of a problem with this statement:
Injuries on the offensive line and protection breakdowns have resulted in pocket pressure and a number of blindside hits. Campbell has also endured poor exchanges from center and with tailback Clinton Portis on handoffs.
Now Buges talks about how they have to protect him....Did you guys see what and how Mike Sellars has been blocking lately....my LORD, it's horrible. They are always talking about what they gotta do. In the first half of the Giants game, they barely touched Jason, then some sideline reporter said that in speaking with Gibbs, he said "they had to protect Jason more"....well didn't you protect him in the 1st half? Then after you made such a crazy adjustment to something that wasn't happening, he got sacked for like 4 or 5 times.....
All I'm saying is, I for one am tired of them putting so much pressure on him as opposed to just letting the kid play and make plays....when you let him play, he will make plays, but he also have to have someone up front blocking as well.....

Sadly, I don't pay attentoin any more to what Gibbs says....I'll believe it when I see them put up 28+ three games in a row winning convincingly....
Why are we the only tam in the league committing back to ourselves and singing KHUMBIYA and all that crap.....
Does anyone notice that every since Gibbs has been back, Their is always something that takes place where the team has to GO back to something or recommit to something....why can't it just be...and lets roll. They sound like a man and a wife that have gone through hard times and decided to get back together just before signing divorce papers 3 or 4 times.....

If I'm not mistaken, I believe they're saying they have to protect better in order to let the kid play. I'm not getting how they're putting pressure on Jason relates to the protection they are talking about.

Having Todd Wade on the OL is causing Campbell not to have time to throw the ball. Wade has been awful.

These things are generally positive for the The Redskins under this regime. We typically play better after we have these sorts of meetings. My problem is why does it always have to come to this point? Why can't we start the season with the drive we seem to have after we have our annual mid-season Player/Coach pow-wow? (THese seem like good questions for Doc)

These things happen to many teams midseason. There are three groups immune to it, those that are terrible. For example, the only meetings the Dolphins are calling now is to figure out where they are going on vacation after the season. The second is the ones that are great. No reason for the Pats to hold a meeting like this. The third are the ones playing above their heads. Every other team that has expectations of 10-12 wins is in this boat when they have too many bumps in the road, which wouldn't be until midseason.
Jim Fasel did it three years in a row with the Giants. One year he took back play calling. Another he "put all his chips in the middle". Billick did it last year changing the play caller midseason. This is not uncommon.
Hopefully it produces similar results to 2005.

how come we always open a game with a open offense, that looks good and drives smoothly, then we never see that same gameplan again throughout the game?
