Default Playoff Rooting Card: Week 17

Last one of the year. Bring on Dallas!!!

Playoff Rooting Card: Week 17

I also give a few thoughts on what a remarkable place we are now and what the Redskins have had to endure all season.

Must've been the easiest rooting card to come up with:

Beat Dallas!

(Okay, now I will go read it)

it was...made it simple. We can still get in if Saints and Vikings lose too, but that seems cheap to me.

I think if the 6th qualifying team finishes 8-8, the 3rd place team should get a bye. 8-8 teams don't deserve to play in the playoffs.

It's like 6-5 teams playing in Bowl games. Rewarding Mediocrity.

Exactly. Let's not have to get in at 8-8 in the sorry NFC. It's kinda embarrassing if you ask me. Let's just go out there and continue this hot streak and BEAT DALLAS!

It absolutely cracks me up that there is a rooting card for week 17.

While I absolutely agree about wanting to win to get in, I have to say if we were 8-8 and won the Super Bowl, I'd never think twice about it. I think this particular team has been through hell and back so any chance they get to play in the postseason is welcome. The record may be mediocre, but this team isn't (again, IMO).

That said, we are going to have an uphill battle on Sunday. This team needs all the support we can muster b/c I think they are playing more on emotion than talent. CP is going to have to pull his Superman routine.

When a team goes 8-8 and wins a playoff game, let alone wins a Superbowl, let me know Smoak.

If we don't win this week and we take the backdoor into the playoffs, we won't deserve it, but more to the point, we will have that very point demonstrated to us.

You are what your record says you are. If we finish 8-8, we will be mediocre. What standard can be used outside of wins and losses?

this got me thinking what was the worst record of a superbowl team, and that was the 1979 Los angeles Rams. Went 9-7 and lost to the Pittsburgh steelers. They did lead them in the fourth quarter though

I remember that team. They beat the Tampa Bucs 9-0 in the NFC Championship game. Wendell Tyler was their RB and Vince Farragamo was their QB. I believe they won their division with 9-7.

The 85 Patriots were also 9-7.

The only team to go from the 6 seed to win the Superbowl were the 2005 Steelers. They were 11-5 BTW.

Amazing what I can remember, but will forget important things.

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/1979/

The Rams went 9-7 and won their division. The Skins went 10-6 and missed the playoffs thanks to losing to Dallas 35-34 the last game of the season.

That would be the first game I ever cried over the results. Age 6.

I hate Dallas!

an 8-8 team, maybe even a couple of them, won in the playoffs a few years ago, making it the first time ever an 8-8 won a playoff game i believe...but nonetheless, i dont care if we make it in at 8-8 or whatever, just qualifying for the postseason is all it takes to get a shot at the superbowl. i would want that shot no matter what record you make the playoffs with

I did some research on our last playoff run in 2005. There are similarities and some differences.

-In 2005 we also needed a late season run to get into the playoffs, though it was 5 games then instead of 4 (hopefully) now.
-In 2005 we faced an NFC East fore in our final game needing a win to get in. Then it was Philadelphia though, not Dallas.
-In 2005 we did not control our own destiny until we faced Dallas late in the season. In 2-005 though it was week 16, not week 17.
-In 2005 our 5 game win streak followed a 3 game long losing streak. This time hopefully it is 4 wins anfter 4 losses.

Although in 2005 in the final weekend we had a shot at the division title if only NY Giants loss to Oakland...they didn't. No such chance this time around.

Just so I am clear, if the Redskins lose to Dallas this weekend, you are of the opinion they deserve to be in the playoffs?

It's safe to say we disagree on that point.

For the record, 2004 was the 1st time 8-8 team ever won in the playoffs and two teams happened to do it the same weekend. Minnesota (Led by Culpepper and Moss) beat Green Bay (10-6) and St.Louis (led by Marshall Faulk/Bulger/Holt) beat Seattle (9-7). Both teams were destroyed the following week by Philly and Atlanta respectively.

8-8 teams are an all time 2-10 in the post-season.

I don't want to go to the playoffs as an 8-8 team, and I stand firm in the opinion that 8-8 teams do not deserve the chance to compete for the Superbowl.
