Our CBs are Ballin'
I just have to say, because I haven't seen anyone really give this the attention it deserves.
Over the course of the last 4 weeks, our CBs, specifically Smoot and Springs have been playin some damn good football. I mean all around. Run support, coverage, and most importantly, making plays on the ball.
Ever since Sean's tragic demise, Smoot in particular has been playing like a man possessed.
These dudes deserve their own thread today. Springs and Smoot are allowing G Dub to drop the soft schemes and do what this defense does best.....Attack.
I am really proud of the effort Smoot and Springs have given in the last 4 (5 for Smoot) weeks.

Smoot and Springs are playing like it is 2004 all over again.
The only criticism I have of Smoot is that even though he consistently lines up deeper then the 5 yard cushion (usually by ten yeards) he is always trying to chuck a receive and once a game he can be counted on an illegal contact penalty.
Other then that Smoot and SPrings have played lights out and I think some of the Spring's bashers on this fu=orum need to do a mea culpa. I did it for Todd Collins, you can do it for the best corner we have on our team!!

I thought the penalty on Smoot yesterday was ticky tack and over the course of the last 4 weeks he has really been making plays on the ball.
I don't have a problem with cushions if you jump routes. It's sitting in a deep cushion and then allowing a WR to run you off for a short route and 1st down. His 3rd down issues have seen much improvement.

Totally agree...good post. Springs and Smoot have been completely different players since Sean's death. Springs seems to get a pick a game, and Smoot almost looks like a shutdown corner. A few weeks ago I thought our biggest need in the draft would be a corner, but now, I'm not so sure of that.

And while we're on the topic.......Reed Doughty needs to get some props. I've unmercifully bashed this kid as a non-talent, but he is also playign some inspired ball.
The PI call on him when he was covering Witten in the Flat was also terrible. I happened to be focused on him during that play and all he did was play that the way you should. Witten initiated the contact on that play.

Love the way our corners have been playing lately and I especially loved that Int by Springs last night. In my head I heard him say as he forced himself into position to make that pick "Thats my ball PUNK!!"

I totally agree here, on both counts. Williams is finally playing Doughty to his strengths and not expecting him to cover half the field like Landry and Taylor could. Reed is solid depth and an occasional starter in the NFL all for a 7th round pick. Not bad even when see through my critical eyes. I think we upgrade over him next year, but Doughty is going to be in the mix for years to come.

i agree our corners have been playing some excellent football the past several weeks. but i also think springs and smoot have been playing well all year save for a game here or there. springs being healthy for 16 games and playing through his back injury when he wasnt healthy has been a big plus. i think we should keep him next season as well despite his cap cost. another reason to keep springs is that rogers will be recovering from a major injury. even torrence isnt giving up big plays, tho he needs to further his development. some of the credit has to go to the front 7 for taking away passing lanes as well and batting down balls at the line. gregg williams and springs were on comcast postgame together last night interviewing and i williams talked about all that springs has gone through to play so well in spite of it, even mentioned his contract squabble this offseason, williams was real proud of him and im sure would want springs to stay in 2008. im waiting to hear the latest smoot quotes about finally making the playoffs as well.

Good topic. I'm loving the way these guys are playing too. I will continue to stress the importance of keeping Sean Springs on this team. IMO, he is too valuable to let go in the offseason, especially since losing Rogers to such a serious injury. We need to make it work financially.

ive been giving doughty props for a few weeks now. i liked what i read about him when we first drafted him and hoped he would find a spot on this team. its nice to see him panning out and showing he can play at this level, i only hope he continues to grow and improve. and on the PI, from what i saw doughty ran into wittens back before the ball got there, didnt bother me much because it wasnt for many yards. id also rather talk about the pass to witten in the endzone that doughty broke up. hes a smart guy who uses that to make up for what he may lack in physical talent

Great post and I agree with your view that our CBs have been playing their tails off. Smoot in particular. Ole Smooty keeps the lockeroom loose and throws his skinny body all over the field.
