Default Rugby 2008

Boys started with a new club this season, Western Loudoun in VA. Hubbo is one of the coaches.

So far they are 2-0 and we've had no injuries in our household, which is always a good thing in Rugby!

You're a rugby family?! That's outstanding! I was a flanker in college. I help out with some of the local teams when I can. Every now and then the Baltimore women call me up to ref.

Congrats on landing well with the new club and good luck!

Niiiiiice, always nice to meet another Rugger.

My husband, Mike, played for the Frederick Men's club for awhile back in the 90's before he crunched a few discs in his neck, now he is a coach and ref.

My boys started with the Frederick Youth RFC, Mike and I (along with 2 others) started the youth club in Frederick.

But after the club became successful (meaning all of the really hard work and cost was already done by us) everyone started sticking their noses in....so we've gone with another club this season. Rugby is intense enough without all of the parental drama.

My oldest (16) is the #10 (Flyhalf). He is also a Captain on the A side. My youngest (14) is playing the 8-Man this season on the B side, which just cracks me up... 'cause to me, he's just my baby!

You're Frederick people?! I played with Frederick all through college. I'd probably play there now with the guys that stayed local if I wasn't too far away to make practice. I went to Mount Saint Mary's and played for coach Briggs. On the 19th I'm headed up that way to play an alumni tournament. Jay Miles is going to be on my team. You and I might actually know each other in real life!

I wish I had started young like your boys. It took me a couple of years before it made any kind of sense. Having those learning years behind me would have made a huge difference.

My boys got beat yesterday by a HUGE team from West End in VA.

The other guys were like, "Yeah, we're all football players" and when we said, "Yes we can tell" they got mad and wouldn't let it go. One kid said, "But we beat you...?" I guess it bugged them.

So finally I had to tell them that you don't tackle like you're in a football game...no jumping over piles, no tackling at the knees, no pile driving (time consuming)

You don't taunt (very un-rugby), you don't say that the other team is "sh**" loud enough in your "huddle" so that everyone can hear you, especially when you are up, you don't punch people (one kid got ejected for this-but my boys said at least 3 others should have gone too)

And you don't allow your blood thirsty coach to run up the score on teams...you'll get a bad reputation in the league. (They have been beating their opponents by 50 points or more, we lost 42-0 but they only scored twice in the first half and I guess their coach was upset about that, he was calling them every name in the book at the half)

I ended it by saying, "Son, this is rugby...the other team receives your immediate respect just by the fact that they've had the courage to step out onto the field with no helmets, no padding, and no shin guards.

Even though you may be bigger and stronger and you are killing everyone else, the other team is just as big a bad ass as your team, simply because they play rugby....you all need to remember that....

PIC of my two boys, they are in the green and are running together and Hubbo is reffing in the green & white striped shirt, this pic was taken right before Jake (who is only 14) laid OUT the kid who is getting ready to catch the ball. I didn't get that shot though 'cause I was too caught up in the fine tackle that he had !!!!!!! (But he was mad that I missed it)

I love this game

When it's time, you should send your kids to the Mount. I bet they're going to be sick college level rugby players. Sick college level rugby players on the team make it easier to go back and watch.

Don't you have to be Catholic to go to the Mount?
Michael is a junior this year and has no clue where he wants to go to school...tick tock...tick tock....

Nope... it's a private institution complete with independant, non-church funding and directors. He should go for a visit. We could set him up to join a practice or a B-side to see what he thinks of the program (I'm still close with the coaching staff)

Good luck with the season and the "no-injuries"

Season is long over and other then bumps & bruises the boys did fine, finishing a respectable 4th. Which is not bad, considering the newly formed VRU had no divisions this year. The top 3 teams were HUGE!

My youngest played Hooker briefly last year. Was not his favorite position.
