I’m sure most of you guys know this, but when I first heard it, a few years back, I didn’t understand it. When they say it's protected, it basically means if the Grizzlies’ pick doesn’t fall within those allotted picks, the Wizards get the pick.
The pick is protected through 19 this year.
In 2009, picks 1-16 are protected
in 2010-12, picks 1-14 are protected
in 2013, picks 1-12 are protected
If the Wizards haven't used the pick by then, they will receive cash and a second-round pick.

As a Grizzlies fan, I can say I’m not confident my team will be out of the cellar by then. But whether the Grizzlies turn it around or not, the Wiz will still get something out of this trade…probably nothing more than a bench player. But if by some miracle, the Grizzlies make the playoffs before 2012, the Wiz would’ve traded a one and done player, for a lottery player. Sounds like a win-win for the Wizards.
