They really have an abundance of players they don't need..they can easily make at least 60 million back from those guys...

Yeah, Perez promised the fans to buy them pretty much everyone if they elected him as president, and, as we saw with Zidane and Ronaldo, when Florentino promises something, it usually happens.

Just off the top of my mind, Real is looking to get rid of: Van Der Vaart, Robben, possibly Snijder, Huntelaar, Drenthe, Metzhelder, Saviola, plus a couple of other monor players. If they sell well, that's upwards of 50 million for sure.
Robben's problem, in Juve's case, is his salary..I think he may be just a bit above Juve's cap (aside from vets like Del Piero and Buffon, I don't think they have other guys making more than 4 million).

Did you get a chance to see Roma play last year or the year before(anywhere but in England)? Seriously, you woul dhave loved it.

It's alright, they'll get the taxpayers to foot the bill.

About 10 years ago, Real were about £160m in debt. To get rid, the local council bought their training ground for about £200m. With the council paying over the odds, Real were able to build a new facility on the outskirts of the city...

Next item Real's shopping list: Maicon.

And if anybody is wondering why Real is doing all this now, check where the Champions League final will be played this year.

Speaking of new jerseys....Liverpool just came out with new away shirt. My local shop already got a shipment of Gerrard and Torres jerseys, but I'm considering ponying up for a Mascherano; assuming Rafa doesn't sell him!

Rich- The EPL most certainly has its mix of physical play along with finess play. You would love a guy like Steven Gerrard who has tremendous overall skills and has long beautiful passes. You would also like Mascherano as he is one of the world's best defensive midfielders and he makes defensive tackles look artful. All leagues have their floppers, but it isn't as rampant in the EPL as other European Leagues; at least from what I've seen.

Considering your TV viewing options are limited, I'd advise sticking with an EPL team. Your Verizon FIOS has FSC on channel 84; which will give you at least 2 of the top 4 EPL teams each week. (Liverpool, ManUre, Chelsea and Arsenal)...and a handful of other teams on a semi-regular basis such as Aston Villa, Everton, Man City, Tottenham, and West Ham. Once you get super-hooked on soccer, you can pony up $14 a month to get Setanta Sports. (I think its channel 1005 or something close to that) which will give you the rest of the top EPL games. Tune into FSC in 2 months as that is when EPL and CL games restart. Until then; crack open a few cold Carlsbergs and enjoy the summer.

While I currently have Setanta I wouldn't advise this. Their company is about to go under and I think they lost a good amount of the broadcasting rights they have had over the past few years. After this round of International qualifiers is over I am dropping it. If they somehow survive and/or the limited broadcasting I have read about is only for Setanta UK then I will rejoin. But as of right now Setanta's days seem numbered.

@*&!^#. Not happy to hear that. They are the only reason I get to watch every single Liverpool game. In fact, the majority of the really great matchups between the top 4 seemed to be on Setanta this past year...and not on FSC.

When you say they are limiting broadcasting; do you mean for EPL games or all games in general? I don't even care to watch the Scottish games (outside of Rangers/Celtics) or rubgy.

I initially heard (2-3 months ago on world soccer daily) the situation was that the EPL's games are divided into 6 broadcasting packages and Setanta only got 1 of the 6, whereas I believe they previously had 3 or at least 2. Sky Sports I believe got the other 5. Now I am not sure if this is completely accurate or if Sky Sports is delivered via Setanta in the US, or via FSC or both.

It does seem certain that Setanta has debt issues. link

Well this article answers some of the questions I had above. link

A massive blow came in February this year when Setanta failed to retain the rights to their two packages of English Premier League rights for the 2010 to 2013 period, winning only one tranche of 23 games.
Sucks. Over the last couple years between FSC and Setanta I could virtually watch every EPL game. Not footing the $15/month if the total amount of games to be shown is 23.

I had read last offseason that ESPN was looking into getting some rights to EPL games starting in 2010, but I haven't heard anything this year. The gist of what I read was that most games would be on ESPN classic, maybe some on ESPN2 for big games. Or they had looked at turning ESPN classic into an ESPN3 of sorts (only five more to go until we get to the ocho!).

Again, I read it a year ago, but haven't seen much about it since.

Crap. I'm with you....getting FSC and Setanta was a perfect scenario; assuming you are willing to part with $180 a year to get access.

I hope Sky Sports begins to offer an attactive package here in the states. I'd CERTAINLY pay $200 bucks for the entire season (sort of like NFL Ticket, or NHL Season Pass...etc) in order to get access to all of the games. Problem is that Soccer is still growing here in the States and you wonder how many Americans would be willing to pony up the $. Brandon - I hope you are right about ESPN coming and getting broadcasting rights. They already have infrastructure to do season passes on demand/ppv.

Regarding the 6 packages....it did seem like Setanta got at least 2-3. I didn't get to miss a single top 4 game all season...so I'm guessing them and FSC divided it equally.

And there is no way I'll pay $180 a year for Setanta if I can only get 23 games. That isn't even 1 a week!

Yeah... all the signs were there. The ESPN crawls started showing scores from EPL, La liga and Serie A as well as a few SA leagues. I hated when they implemented that. Prior to that I could tivo a game and not have to worry about hearing the score on sportstalk radio or seeing the score on ESPN news. Now I have to go into avoidance mode like with the other sports I want to watch on tape delay without knowing the result.

I heard rumors that ESPN was going to bid for some of the EPL broadcast rights this last go around and I remember some media folks being surprised when they opted to hold off. I basically heard the same details as you describe above as to how ESPN would present it.

Someone once suggested that we could slap them repeatedly with a frozen fish, break a watermelon over their head and maybe light all their money on fire.

I think that might help a little.
