Default Coles catch but not a catch

Why is it that the ground can't cause a fumble for a ball carrier yet the ground can cause a completed pass to become incomplete?

I think that this is really the issue with the call on Coles against the Patriots. Is the NFL trying to stifle passing or am I missing some other point?

Comments appreciated!

It was clearly a catch, even the national news is unanimous on it. FOUR feet land in bounds & takes THREE STEPS. That's a long way for a ball to travel without being caught.

I just think its has to do with TV ratings. If the refs call the ball a catch, the games over, we just snap the ball & everyone changes the channell. If the balls a non-catch, the game goes down to the final seconds. My bet is if we were behind the catch would have counted.

Also we got to stop leaving the game in the hands of the refs. If you don't give the Giants the inside catches (Spurrier after the game said they didn't use a 'Prevent-defense' but they did play the outside - SO WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE D THAT HELD THEM TO 10 POINTS IN 55 MINUTES!) none it should have mattered. Quality teams keep it out of the refs hands. We're going to get burned if we keep this up. Personally I think prevent is for teams with a weak defenses. I think are D is way too good to be playing prevent.

It's amazing how these silly and petty rulings seem to pop against us and for the pats.

Welcom kd, you'll find plenty of discussion related to this topic in other threads. To sum it up it's bull$hit, no logic IMO went into making the RIGHT call on the field last sunday. Bull$hit.

Great comments redbeard. Thanks to all those who welcomed me into HR.

I too think the refs and/or the rules they inforce are really ruining the NFL. Pass interference was rarely called 20 years ago. Only obvious violations were called. Now it seems you have to look at a replay several times to catch some of the pass interference violations and many times the contact by the offending player really didn't make a difference in whether the receiver would have caught the ball or not. Because of this, receivers not only have to be able to catch the ball these days, they have to be able to put on an act for the ref on how they got screwed by the DB or safety rubbing up against them a little.

The refs really sank to their low point when they screwed the Giants last year in the playoffs ( no I don't like the Giants, just feel bad the refs beat them rather than the Niners). So when is it enough?

My bottom line point - if your going to "over officiate", then you better be getting the calls right.

Well....its come to the point now, were the team with the least amount of "bad calls" against them wins.

Sure...there is holding on EVERY play. So how does the referee crew distinguish which type of holding is a "flagable offense" and which is not? By the book...shouldn't they throw a flag on EVERY PLAY?

That use to be VERY ture but now a days there are even legal ways to hold which makes it more complicated - of course you can still find illegal holding on about every play. ........... Make the Ref full time professionals which have to attend training seminars in the off season, phyical conditioning program year round, and group evaluation studies. With all the money that is involved in professional sports, it demands professional full time officating. It will never get perfect because human error should be part of the game but it can get alot better and reduce the BS. At these that's IMO.

KDSKIN:

You are dead-on with the over-officiating. What passes for pass interference today, would have been a text book how-to model for rookies 5 years ago.

I think part of it is the effect of instant replay on referee-ing. Now calls are made by camera. It's almost this bad - "Instant replay clearly shows three red pixels overlapping two blue pixels." *lol*

I think the other half of it is - the NFL has been madly encouraging the passing game the last ten years with the rule changes as well as the enforcing of rules, as it's good for TV ratings.

My bet is this is the way referee-ing is going. And the players will probably lag behind in the old standards for awhile before adapting and everyone gets used to it in 5 years or so.

What do you think?

Ok everyone. Thanks for all the comments and welcomes to HR.

I am glad to see I am not the only one who had enough with that call.
