Default Rio beats out Chicago and Madrid for 2016

Link

I guess the power of Oprah and the Obamas was not enough to sway IOC voters.

Quote:
The 2016 Olympics are going to Rio de Janeiro, putting the games in South America for the first time.

Rio beat surprise finalist Madrid in the last round of voting.

Chicago was knocked out in the first round—in one of the most shocking defeats ever handed down by the International Olympic Committee—and Tokyo was eliminated in the second round.

Rio had played heavily on the fact that South America has never previously hosted the games, while Europe, Asia and North America have done so repeatedly. Now, only Africa and Antarctica remain as continents that have not been awarded an Olympics.

Ha! Take that Oprah!

Seriously, though, Brazil deserves it. I'd go. I might go.

I was happy to see this. Good for Rio. That's a favorable time zone for our TV watching, I think.

It would have been tough to give it to a country that cares less about the Olympics.

But, in the IOC's defense, I'd want to put the women of Rio on TV long before the women of Chicago.

Only if they guarantee that no transvestites will be shown.

Speaking of such matters, I wish the late great Peter Allen was here to see this. Here's his famous hit "Rio" from the late 1970's. My favorite Aussie! He looks just like Bill O'Reilly. lol!

Sadly, the Rio trannies would still probably trump Chicago's female population on camera lol.

I guess Obama should have offered more than five minutes alone with Joe Biden in a closet to the IOC officials lol.

lol! He stumbled over a few words during his otherwise flawless pitch for Chicago in fluent Danish at Copenhagen.

If it helps give the people in the Favelas a better life great. If the good folk in the Brazilian government pull a Beijing it will be another Olympic odyssey with a back drop of poverty we never see.

Every country tries to put their best foot forward. When LA had the Olympics in '84, they didn't organize a Trolley Tour into Compton lol. I expect Brazil to showcase what's great about their country (and there is a lot for them to be proud of) but I also expect them to downplay their problems, as well.

What China did was Wizard of Oz crap, though. It was despicable. And the IOC allowed it to happen for fear of making a scene.

I'd imagine it is gonna be one crazy party scene for the Olympics down there. Should be interesting to see what happens.
