Default Shanahan and Redskins Talking

I did not see this posted. After reading the Denver post and this I think the skins next coach will be Shanahan.

Report: Shanahan, Skins have been talking

Posted by Mike Florio on December 18, 2009 8:54 AM ET

Multiple sources have told us in the wake of Daniel Snyder's decision to swap out Vinny Cerrato for Bruce Allen that the maneuver was simply the first step in a plan that culminates with the hiring of Mike Shanahan to coach -- and, as a practical matter, to run -- the team.

Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports that, indeed, Shanahan and the Redskins have been talking about just such an arrangement.

Klis also explains that Shanahan and Allen are indeed a package deal, and that Allen would have gone to Buffalo if Shanahan had been interested in taking over the Bills.

And while the two men have not previously worked together, Klis points out a few links between them.

First, they both worked for the Raiders, so they arguably are in a position to commiserate regarding the challenges of answering to owner Al Davis.

Second, Shanahan's son worked for the Bucs as an assistant coach.

Third, Shanahan and Allen worked together on the trade that sent quarterback Jake Plummer to Tampa. In the end, the Bucs made $3.5 million on the transaction in bonus money recovered from Plummer, who never reported and eventually retired.

So good luck, Redskins, in persuading a minority candidate to interview for a job that many are now convinced will go to Shanahan.

That said, we've got a feeling that the Redskins already have complied with the Rooney Rule by somehow making Greg Blache and/or Jerry Gray believe that they actually have a shot at becoming the next head coach of a team owned by a man who loves to make a big splash -- and who many believe has had his sights set on Shanahan from the moment he became available in January.

I would rather have a new head coach, but do the math...

BA + MS >> VC + JZ

It will be nice to be a legit organization again. You can't argue that Allen and Shanahan have been successful in their previous assignments. Their success and experience will be a huge asset when dealing with the unique challenges of running a huge market team with an active owner where the team makes the front page 365 days a year.

I wasn't a fan of Shanny being the HC and GM...but I could certainly live with Allen as GM and Shanny as HC/President. I think they are both strong personalities that wouldn't let Snyder get his nose too far into the decision making. Dont' get me wrong, Danny will have "some say"...as evident by the "All decisions made will be Redskins decision" comment at the Press Conference. But I think Danny will have less with experienced guys like Shanny and Allen around. In fact, I dont' think Shanny will come to the Skins unless Danny gives him assurances that his level of input will be limited.

I used to live in Dever for about four years. I think everyone in Denver would have agreed with the fact that Shanahan can coach in this league. However, they also would have agreed that he needed someone above him to veto some decisions he made for the Broncos. Hence Shanahan needs an ego check sometimes.

As long as Danny Boy will let Bruce Allen GM and as long as Shanahan does not try to play a minature version of GM and sticks to coaching, I think it could be a good move.

Part of me wonders how well they would work together when they both have large egos. I could see them disagreeing early and often on personnel matters and the Skins would be looking for yet another head coach.

Damn my pessimistic tendencies. I must be a Redskins fan.

Well, there is only one GLARING need for this team right now and thats OLINE. Hard to argue about this. I can see arguing over a QB maybe.

RB.... na....anyone can run in his system. I hope.

Guys lets be honest, we don't know how well these guys are going to do here. The main thing is they have an owner that wants to win, and is willing to pay for it. Many owners aren't that open w/ their wallets.

I have this feeling that we're moving in the right direction and that BA instantly added some much needed cred to our FO. It's like, finally, we're doing things the right way.

I wasnt excited about Shanahan running the whole show. I have much more confidence though with him coaching under Allen though. It wouldnt surprise me to see a lot of action from our backups in the last 3 games. Alridge might even be brought up. I hope they re-sign JC and focus on the O-line this year...but i do like the idea of mike williams at G..just hope he develops there. GO SKINS !!!

Well if we are to believe that Bruce Allen is a straight up guy ........ Zorn is here for the rest of this season.

Well after multiple questions about new coaches yesterday BA finally said "That spot is not open" Jim Zorn is the coach.

I went and looked up Shanny's record as HC of the Broncos. I was fairly impressed. He is 138-86 overall (.616) but I think any skins fan who is honest with him/herself would be happy with these results over a 14-year period.

1995 8-8
1996 13-3 1st in AFC West lost to Jacksonville Jaguars in AFC Divisional Game.
1997 12-4 2nd in AFC West Super Bowl XXXII Champions.
1998 14-2 1st in AFC West Super Bowl XXXIII Champions.
1999 6-10
2000 11-5 2nd in AFC West Lost to Baltimore Ravens in AFC Wild-Card
2001 8-8
2002 9-7
2003 10-6 2nd in AFC West Lost to Indianapolis Colts in AFC Wild-Card
2004 10-6 2nd in AFC West Lost to Indianapolis Colts in AFC Wild-Card
2005 13-3 1st in AFC West Lost to Pittsburgh Steelers in AFC Championship Game.
2006 9-7
2007 7-9
2008 8-8

Plus, I think he could be better with a true GM and an owner who is dedicated to winning and offers full financial support.

We have been talking to Shanahan all along? The decision was to bring both he and BA in as a package? All minority interviews were done in the hour before the announcement? I am truly shocked !!! (NOT!!!)

Of course Zorn will finish the season. And get fired(or resign and become a consultant) the day after the season mercifully ends.

Also, Jon Gruden is 95-81 (.540) with one SB win as a head coach

But look at the decade following the SB....only 1 Playoff Win. Even the Skins got 2 over that timespan. I'm still on board with a Shanny/Allen combo...but we need this team rebuilt to consistantly win playoff games. I've got my fingers crossed.
