Michael Wilbon is just another in a line of hacks who desperately try to imitate a sports writer. Those of you who know, I have long stated that there are no true sports writers in this age of instant media and instant gratification. ~ Pathetic ~
There were great sports writers... just not any left now!
And for those of you who think I 'm rambling on like an old man(which I am)
Google these names:
Grantland Rice
Red Smith
Shirley Povich - Redskins fans should know this name already!

They are the standard!

Smith and Posnanski have a ways to go in my opinion, even though they have ascertained some credibility. If you enjoy their work and feel that it is more fact and honest reporting than over blown, self centered blathering, than enjoy.
. . . just my 2 cents

To some degree we are comparing apples with oranges, as Smith doesn't write game stories or columns.

But in the world of sportswriting Smith is literally as good as gets. I have a lot of respect for the guys you mentioned (Red Smith was better than Povich or Rice, IMO) but none of them were any more talented than Gary Smith.
