you cant depend upon that for next year.. the Giants picked up Tynes who had problems and he has solidified their kicking game.. there will be other possibles this off season besides the likes of Rayner or Folk..

It's not the 10 misses that bothers me, it's where he misses. By where I mean the distance. 4 of the 10 are from inside 39 yards (Which means the LOS was the 22 yard line or closer)

It seems ridiculous that I have to hold my breath every time he lines up for what ought to be a gimme. Suisham all over again.
What kind of talent evaluator is Danny Smith, if this is his guy? What kind of coach is he if his squads can't seem to get out of their own way and continue to make mental mistakes that cost the team acres of field position and points left on the field?

Not sure how important worth ethic/attitude is for kickers, but I'm liking Gano in both areas:
After spending time with his wife at home Sunday night, Gano headed to Redskin Park to watch tape to determine what happened on his two first-half missed field goals.
“There was nobody here,” he said. “I came in here to figure out what I did wrong. I watched film from the beginning of the season when I was hitting the ball well and compared it to [the Bucs game].”
After a couple hours of research, the conclusion on his misses from 34 and 24 yards?
“It was really hard to break it down and go into detail because my form looked the same as when I was making all my kicks,” Gano said. “I think it came down to my plant foot being a little too far behind the ball.”
“I wouldn’t be surprised if they brought some guys in but as far as I’m concerned, I’m young and learning from every game and I think I’ll keep getting better,” he said. “I believe I’ll be in the league for a long time. I’m having some growing pains now and I need to fix them quick.
“I left six points off the board. That’s not acceptable.”

i think 83 % is the benchmark kickers need to have in the nfl.. Gano aint there

If all his misses were from 50 and beyond, I would be more comfortable with his current percentage. The issue for me is the number of chippers he misses coupled with the inability to hit 50 and beyond.

Interesting that you want Sexy Rexy to play QB because you feel the season is over and it's time for auditions but at the kicker position you don't want the rookie to have three more games to see if he can work through some of his accuracy problems.
Gano obviously has a big-time leg. The upside seems well worth allowing him to stay with us at least through the 2011 pre-season.

I don't see Shally's positions as inconsistent. In both instances he is advocating change.

cutting vs audition - not exactly the same strategy

I think his argument would be that he has had an 13 game audition and in one category is statistically at the bottom of the league in his position and thus change at the position is necessary.
Similarly, he would argue that McNabb is near the bottom of the league statistically and having career worst numbers in some categories and also has had 13 games to audition and thus change at the position is necessary to assess for 2011
Of course I disagree in both cases, but the argument is pretty consistent, viewed from the point of view of replacing the current starter and getting a head start on assessing for the future.

Ok, fair enough. He may be more consistent than I was giving him credit.
I guess my issue is that any kicker we bring in will be some retread (I'm hearing Novak will be at least one of them) where we basically know what we're getting - mediocrity. Is it important to "audition" someone who's already been in and out of the league for 5+ years and been cut eight times?
The risk/reward seems to justify holding onto Gano. The benefits of three games of Nick Novak isn't worth risking even a ten percent chance that Gano could be a future Akers.

I get a little giddy over Novak, I can't really remember if he was that good but that one special game moment he helped give us was Epic.

1:57 to the end.
The game where the Skins blocked the kick against the Cowboys with a few seconds left, Sean Taylor picked it up and ran and got face masked we got an un-timed down, and then Novak kicked the game winner.

My question is when he misses, why does he always misss to the left but can't correct it?

He's been on the Skins' roster for 17 games. He was 4/4 last year in field goals, but missed an extra point (not too surprising, but maybe it was blocked). He was picked up by Vinny. He was picked up by Vinny. Again, he was picked up by Vinny. Do you know who thought he was a good kicker? Vinny. The same guy who drafted a punter who sucked when the Skins were desperate for o-lineman.
