Default DFA: Final look at the 2011 draft

Guff on!

There were a couple skins-specific questions that I saved for this:
Q: what team(s) you think the skins are most likely to trade down with?
A: New England. They have the firepower to move up and it would allow the Skins to take a QB they want and still have picks to fill other needs.

Q: do you see a possible trade down in round 2?
A: I think its far more likely to deal up into the late 1st for the skins, but if a team offered a late 2nd+a couple picks, they would take it.

nice job. thanks for answering my questions btw.
a few notes
1.you are not buying into the wilkerson hype.i dont really understand it much.
2.cam newton is a bad fit for most teams lol
3. barksdale is an interesting choice for the all akh team at RT. i like him but i dont know if i like him over carpenter though.
4.do you think would mason foster be a bust inside in a 3/4?
5.what round do you think sturdviant is drafted as the skins are clearly interested?

I understand it in late round 2. Not mid 1st round. He's very inconsistent and plays very soft imo.

No, but he's an ILB in it. The skins could do better.

He'll be gone in the second imo. I'd rather have Bruce Carter.

Nice final analysis. Some of my gut predictions:
  • Dalton / Kaepernick / Ponder - one or more of then will outshine Newton and Gabbert in their careers.
  • Locker has a shot to develop if he can get with the right team and coach and sit a while.
  • Somebody is going to fall in love with Mallett's arm, start him early, and he will put up better passing numbers in his first 3 years than any of the QBs, but he will also throw a ton of INTs and take a lot of sacks. He will also continue to have off the field issues.

Hell of a read Akh, must've took you ages to pen that!

It'll be interesting to see what predictions come to fruition.

Yeah, Kerry Collins 2.0. Which means I'll run into him in bars start buying shots with like I did with Kerry Collins lmao.

akh, you feeling alright today? 4 Tar Heels on your "all-Akh draft team".

Great job as usual.

Terrific analysis. Thanks for your work. A couple of things struck me:

1. You think it more likely for the Skins to deal up into the late 1st rather than trading down. How would the Skins accomplish that, since they appear to be devoid of any ammo for doing so. Assuming the #41 pick is involved in any such trade, what else can Wash use (since everything else available is 5th round or later)? With only three days to go, there is virtually no chance that a new CBA will be inked before the draft to allow the use of current NFL players and future picks in trades.

2. In the Q&A portion, you alluded to "handshake" agreements. Are you saying it is within the rules to make "handshake" trades now involving NFL players and future picks, which can be ratified later after a new CBA is signed? Or, are you saying teams are making such deals on the quiet against the rules. Don't the teams who do that risk incurring heavy penalties from the League Office if discovered later? I certainly think the Commissioner should come down hard on teams that disregard the rules in this manner.

Great work as usual.

Being local to the Carolina scene, I'll offer in what I'm hearing down here since it likely affects what happens down through the top 10 or so picks.

Scuttle here is that the pick is down to Newton, Dareus and Peterson (they've missed on too many WR's lately to factor Green in). Local beat writer who's been with the team since it started offered up his take recently:
-if they go QB, it's Newton. They've talked all the way down to his high school coaches for insight. Gabbert doesn't wow them and the fact that the wasn't even the best QB in his conference removes him from consideration.
-Dareus fills a real need and is a safe/justifiable pick even if he might only be an above average player and not really live up to #1 status.
-Peterson also fills a need and could double as a return man and that ups his value/potential impact. Rivera runs an aggressive D and having a potential lock down corner is valuable.
-This is Hurney's draft to run and, by extension, will determine his immediate future. In the past, Fox had equal if not final say but not this year.
-Richardson has never been involved in making draft decisions and he didn't see anything to indicate that this setup would change this year, despite rumors tha Richardson doesn't like Newton.
-Their new OC, Chudzinsky, came from SD where they ran a pro-style, vertical offense and not a WC derivative. This better fits Newton, but Chud has a reputation for being impatient and a hard @ss who might not want to have to work a guy like Newton as much as he'll need it.
-His gut pick was that they'd go safe and go D and that likely means Dareus. The lack of stud at QB combined with them instituting a new system and possibly not having any off-season to work on grooming a college QB just seems like too much work and too much risk. They'll look for a veteran when things get settled to placehold and deal with their next franchise QB next year.

Great comments as always, I just wanted to address this part: Everyone is reporting that he's going to institute a WC version--probably more along the lines of what Norv runs. BUt you're 100% right that his personality probably won't work well with Cam.

The harsh reality for them is that his personality likely won't work with Clausen either, as if that matters. Matt Moore Part II here we come.

They need a vet(like McNabb, who they should deal for imo) and some developmental project like Pat Devlin.

Marcus Cannon reportedly has been diagnosed with lymphoma. Stage 2(which is treatable). This will drop him 2-3 rounds, but he's still the top OG on my board.
