Right. Beck is very late to this party. I'm trying very hard NOT to expect a seasoned game manager with not quite a rocket arm...

Beck's story could be very similar to Steve Youngs. Before anyone toasts my hind end for comparing poop to a HOFer read Youngs Bio. He was considered a bust in Tampa. Not saying Beck could be this type of player but one can only hope. Shanny saw and still sees something in this guy. I hope he shows us sometime soon.

I believe that this was discussed in the draft QB thread back in april tho.

I don't buy the aversion to the deep ball BS. He is playing it the way Shanny wants him to, and probably they want 8 man fronts and play-action come real season. Also, there are highlights of him chucking the ball 70 yards at BYU.
Beck has been a pleasant surprise. Is he Tom Brady? No.
But then again, at one point, people were saying WTF is Kurt Warner?
Let's see how this plays out on the field.

The Tampa/Dolphins analogy works pretty well, but you're leaving some things out. First, Young had a level of sheer athletic talent that Beck does not. He was a more successful college player (second in Heisman voting) and a USFL star before he came to the league. Also, Beck languished as a third-stringer with the Fins before being cut and picked up by the Ravens, then traded to us for camp fodder. The Bucs traded Young to the 49ers for a 2nd and a 4th.
If Beck succeeds as a starter then in some ways his story will be more remarkable, because no one still thought he was starting material before he came here. Young struggled but was still regarded as a talented player.

I think Beck has a shot this season because we didn't draft QB with our #10 pick, but traded down. I think he's got to have a pretty good season - getting us to .500 and getting his QB rating above 80. Otherwise the team will draft a QB to finish off the 3 year rebuild. Anything less for Beck means he will be competing with Rex next year or if he sux bad enough then they'll let Rex try his hand.
It's all on Beck. He has a shot. The running game will be very good with Hightower & Helu. The WR have improved a lot from last year. The OL will be average I think [hope]. He either takes this gift and runs with it or he'll be looking over his shoulder later in the year or next PS with a new wunderkind QB.
