The roster isn't there yet, but it's not as far away as it looks right now. If we can find a QB (I know, a huge 'if') I think we're ready to compete for the division next year.

The way I see it is that the injuries are painting a bleaker picture of shanahan's competence.
Any football fan could have looked at our oline roster and depth and say that is not a good lineup and if we get one injury then we are going to be in trouble. Consider the known facts: our RT has an ongoing injury problem, we have been plagued by injuries on the line in the past, and we decided to go with some untested players. knowing this, it should have been obvious to shanahn that he needed more quality depth. He failed.
This team isn't failing because of injuries, it is failing because it is forcing a complex scheme on players who don't fit it and/or the coaches are doing a crap job coaching up the players.
All these problems lie at shanahan's head. Shanahan chose the players. Shanahan coaches the players. Like I said, I don't expect superbowl caliber, but I expect marked improvement and I am not seeing it.

I'd be with you if we'd only suffered a few injuries. But just go back and look at the offensive line combinations we've used starting with the second half of the Philly game. It's a new group every week. We're talking about major injuries to 5+ guys. Toss in injuries to our best TE and our best WR, and then add our best WR prospect.
Even a deep roster with a great QB would have tons of trouble with this kind of turnover.

I am sure you heard the example of a team called the green bay packers who won the superbowl with 15 players on the IR.
Every team has injuries on the oline every year. We just choose not to prepare for it. Teams like us who are using inexperienced players and players with injury issues should be even more prepared with adequate depth.
I don't think we have seen a major drop off in TE play.
Hankerson only contributed one game and probably wouldn't have had that opportunity if santana didn't get hurt so that injury shouldn't matter. Moss wasn't doing anything special before he was injured. We had 8 WRs on our roster, we should be able to handle a couple injuries.
Let your excuse making continue.

Strongly disapprove. The decision on not drafting O-Linemen and creating depth is starting to show its ugly head. I noticed during yesterday's Chargers vs Bears game that ex Redskin Edwin Williams got the start at LG for Chicago.

Green Bay was able to overcome the injuries because they have arguably the best QB in the league. And because of the injuries they were 8-6 with two games to play. They very nearly missed the playoffs despite having a team talented enough to win the whole thing.
Suffice to say I disagree about the importance of losing Moss and Cooley. Fred Davis has been inconsistent as of late and we clearly don't have enough WR weapons to lose our best option.

Greenbay didn't have an injury at QB and neither have we. They had the same qb before and after the injuries so that isn't the issue They overcame those injuries because they had depth and their backups were coached up and prepared when they hit the field. Our starters don't even look prepared.
I agree about davis' inconsistency (since his rookie year) but I would still say TE isn't a position causing us an issue right now.

The point isn't that we've had an injury at QB, it's that when you have a great QB it's easy to overcome injuries at other positions, particularly offensive line.

So then you agree that shanahan is to blame because it is his incompetence that has resulted in a subpar qb leading our team?

Shanahan is to blame for who we have playing QB this season, there is no doubt.
I'm of the opinion last year's off-season wasn't designed for the 2011 season alone. I think he didn't love his QB draft options and decided that accumulating picks and aggressively addressing the defense was the way to go. The Rex/Beck QB thing was a way to "get by" before addressing the QB position during a much deeper draft the following year.

Well he failed there too. Kerrigan has been good. Jenkins was over drafted. Cofield and Bowen have been meh and the idea that if we overpay a dline he will instantly transform into a true nose tackle hasn't exactly worked. The Wilson and Atogwe project hasn't been too fruitful. And then there is the whole stockpiling of WRs and RBs as opposed to drafting oline so our future qb doesn't get killed. Either way we blew it there. Even if you support the WR and RB heavy draft, how can you support us not developing them until we have to because of injuries. Not to mention the fact that why on earth is choice starting before Helu or even on this roster when Royster is sitting on the practice squad.
By the way, his offense has even made Rex worse in the most important stat. He is averaging more INT/game than he ever has in his career.
He has pretty much failed no matter which way you look at it. But I look forward to more of your creative apologist excuses

I'm reserving judgement until I see what happens this off-season and during the 2012 season. Clearly you have already decided he's a failure, but i simply need to see another year before I decide.

I think eventually shanahan will be successful but his success will equate to a bunch of 9-7 type seasons. My position is that a veteran head coach shouldn't have to waste 2 seasons and make countless obvious mistakes on the road to success. I also believe that he will never adjust his scheme to maximize his personnel and therefore he will always be limited as a coach.
