Gaither cut...
I'm not sure if he is recovered from off-season back surgery or if he just lacks work ethic but I wouldnt mind kicking the tires on him. Id probably cut Polumbus for him and see if he can become the swing tackle we currently lack. While I like Smith as well, all reports indicate he has a long way to go and is very raw.

If he is healthy i sure would take a look at him. Gaither is only 25.

he was in for one play for KC on sunday night after brandon albert got banged up. he got nabbed with a false start and then was pulled for albert again.
worth looking into, though, if not simply to cover all bases.

The guy's a head case and I'd be leery of anyone that two teams, both of whom could use his potential, have given up on. He doesn't appear to be a long term solution for any team so adding him to this roster seems pointless.

You are right about this, but I would consider claiming him anyway because I believe he had hist best years playing LT under our O-Line coach Chris Foerster. Maybe playing near home (he want to U-Md.) will benefit him. I would keep Polumbus and cut Domonique Johnson. At minimum, I would bring Gaither in for a workout if he clears waivers.
Like you said, though, his career is probably over. He does not appear to have the work ethic and dedication to the game that would allow him to play up to his considerable talent.

how many fat, lazy, injured players have turned their careers around and been effective ? Maybe Orlando Brown ?? but few others get it
i would rather give Willie Smith reps and see what a hungry young player can do

I agree for a lot of the reasons you stated that we should take a look at him. He might not be willing to do what it takes to suceed but with our OL depth and his talent I'd take a shot. I mentioned cutting Polumbus because I think even an unmotivated Gaither is better lol, Johnson is expendable too though.

Polumbus is expendable next year (I hope) but he started two weeks ago and played half-way decently considering he had just been signed. With Hurt having been hurt (isn't he always Hurt?), and young guys learning how to play with pain in the NFL, my thought process was keeping him around rather than Johnson, who I don't think has even been active for a game yet. I am hoping, seemingly like everyone else on the board, that we will devote at least a couple of middle round draft picks to some interior linemen who will increase the overall talent level and depth of our O-Line. We desperately need it.

i would claim him and try him at guard the rest of the season if it works out its one less hole to fill.hes worked with forester before so it will be interesting to see if we put in a claim. gaither>locklear>polumbus

Cody is very young and i dont think he has surgical history of back problems
same with McKinnie (no surgery).
but those are the exceptions, i think

To take an extreme example from our own backyard, Mike Williams. Although it is arguable that he turned his career around, since he was only able to get one year out of his body after he dropped over 100lbs. in one year. Just the fact that he was able to play that year was pretty incredible.
I would love to see what Willie Smith can do, but we cannot afford to get our QB hurt. If the coaches feel he is ready, I would put him in at RT next time Jammal Brown struggles. Brown played a good game agvinst the Seahawks.

yep... both of those guys had pretty big weight issues. mckinnie clocked in at 380ish after the lockout, but managed to get his weight down once he went through camp with the ravens.
cody clocked in at 360ish during the draft/combine, but took the initiative and lost a weight during the offseason.
neither had serious injury problems.

McKinnie is a close example but not exact. He's got an ego problem but had realized his potential; it took a surprise cut to check his ego and wake him up and it remains to be seen how long that sticks.
Cody was just an immature kid who didn't understand how to prepare, but once he got the message he apparently worked hard and now is playing some ball.
Gaither has been around long enough to know better and he's still not taking things seriously and playing games. Add in the back issue and it's a bad combination. Being out of shape and/or lazy is one thing but having additional motivation issues compounds that quite a bit.
