How does "showing that they are good" improve a team? they either are or they arent. If winning for the sake of winning was truly a value to teams then I would beg to say more people would give a crap about winning in the preseason. Winning teaches Winning is one of the most overblown things in sports right up there with pregame speeches.

If the team is winning then that means the players we have are performing well.
Why is the fact that the players we have would be performing well and improving a bad thing?

Because IMO opinoin performing well and improving are not tied to winning. Case in point Perry Riley and Kerrigan. The bolded part is also important. We already have them. We dont have a QB and higher drafting order improves the chances of selecting the QB we want.

So would you say the team improved the following season after we won out in 05' and 07' to make the playoffs?

We followed '05 up by hiring Al Saunders and installing a whole new offense and brought in a bunch of overpriced ineffective FAs. Any momentum we had was screwed.
'07 we were a very old team
Would you say we improved when we drafted Heath Shuler?

I would argue performing well and improving are tied to winning.
Higher drafting order does improve our chances of selecting the QB we want, but decreases the chances of that team successfully winning a SB. Again, Qbs taken outside the top ten have won more Super Bowls the past ten years then those taken in the top ten. Only 4 of the top QBs drafted since 1983 have won Super Bowls. The reason is because you want your QB to come into a solid foundation, not ask them to be saviors of a pitiful squad.
Look at Cam Newton, Sam Bradford, Matt Stafford. All talented and all haven't done much because they are stuck on bad teams, Bradford and Stafford getting beat up the whole time. Compare that to Roethlisberger, Rodgers and Sanchez who came into good teams. It's much better to be a good team that drafts a QB then a bad one. That's why lower first round picks fare better.

Which is it, do you want them to win or do you want a higher draft pick? They are mutually exclusive.
And correct the team is what it is. If they win out, they are a 9-7 team.
|
Duckin's point is exactly correct and logical. Wanting your team to have a high draft pick as possible so we can get the players they want is logical. However much of sports and fandom is illogical, and I embrace that. I want my team to win because I want it damnit. I don't think about draft picks (and neither do coaches or players) while the game is going on. But when we lose, which is more often then not, i soothe the hurt by knowing we have a better draft pick.
No matter where we pick the higher the better as it will give us more opportunity to get the guys we target. Nothing wrong with that statement.

I have a question not to hijack the thread or anything but what about a Trade where we send a third and a 5th to NE for Mallet?....just wanting your feedback on it.
Trying to think like Shanny, he cant keep bringing in retreads, the kid still young, he does not really have the patience for a young QB even though he has to spend a pick on one anyway or the fanbase will go wild after shanny...he'd better figure this one out. He's basically penned himself to a corner where he would almost have to draft one...

They'd probably want more, but I would consider it.

I'd consider swapping seconds with them if they threw in, say, a 5th rounder with Mallet.

if we swap No1's. and they throw in mallet and a 4th..at least he'd get a chance to play....as long as tom is in the mix the kid will not be able to play.
or is that too much..

Nah, don't make that deal. Thats 20ish picks. I don't think Mallet is worth that. If they want to throw in the Saints' 1st along with their 1st and Mallet, I'd think about it.

Will Shanny look after a Griffin though? Or will he Pay more attention to Barkley....Which QB will Shanny fall in love with?...I think he's gonna go after Jones. I dont want him he just seems like the shanny type...rather have RGIII.

First off: I don't think its a lock that he'll draft a QB high. If he does, it depends on who's making the decision. If its Kyyle, then Barkley or Landry Jones seems likely. If its Mike, RG3 is far more likely. I hope its Mike making the decision on this, I'm a fan of RG3.

I don't trust USC QBs and I think Barkley will get taken no later than 5th. I see Landry Jones as a borderline first round QB but somebody who will get taken higher because he's the next best. RGIII is the best we can hope for picking between 8-15 IMO.
I have been thinking that maybe we franchise tag Landry and package him with our first and that can move us enough to ensure we get RGIII despite picking in the mid-1st round. Maybe throw in our extra 4th rounder just to seal the deal.
