I will wait to pass judgement on this hire. Historically, players that had less then stellar careers turn out to be excellent coaches, so there is some hope this will work.

Some...

I assume the connection is that Hilliard was an assistant WR's coach for the Florida Tuskers when Haslett was the head coach.

Hard to get excited about Ike Hilliard, but maybe he'll surprise. I have to say this coaching staff seems to be dead-set on picking people with direct connections to the rest of the coaching staff.

Who knows? Hilliard and Toomer used to eat our defense apart in New York.

What do you think about hiring Lawrence Taylor as the LB coach? *ducks*

Our WR group is not a strength for the team and hasn't been for decades. So any move (like changing the WR coach) at least gives us some hope toward improving this corps. Hopefully he will help Shanahan and Allen stop from hiring one-year old guys, while our new players develop pine rash.

One things for certain, Hillard will be watching an enormous amount of film over the next two months to get us a good WR at a lower level. Same with analyzing games to look for a younger FA WR to take over at the #1 WR spot - from game 1.

so for those who were critical of this hire, my question is, what is wrong with Ike as an assistant coach ?

he certainly knows the position and has some coaching experience.. he is young enough to be energetic.. if not Ike, who would you have realistically wanted ??

For me the decision to not retain McCardell reeks of scapegoating by Kyle, so that is why I am not particularly fond of the hire. I have no idea whether McCardell was a good coach or not and I have no idea about Hilliard being a quality coach. I did feel like the play of our WR group improved over the last season so I just don’t understand the shake-up.

coaches know that they are all hired, to be fired.. i agree that there were others who should have walked the plank, but that is the nature of their business.. McCardell will find work as he is a classy individual and a smart man. i wish him well wherever he is..

While coaches understand that, my point is that I am not sure he deserved to be let-go. So to answer your initial question, I am not excited about this hiring because I feel like the OC threw one of his assistants under the bus and am not convinced this is not a hire for the sake of a hire rather than actually improving the Redskins' situation. Time will tell if that feeling is borne out, but that's how it felt to me and that's mostly why I didn't bother to comment.
