Franchising a F/A back-up QB when there is a clear trade market for his services isn't stupid at all. Franchising a Back-up TE....Now that's Stupid.

LMAO! Well played Sir
I just dont see anyone reaching for Flynn if theres a #1 pick involved. And once you make that commitment, you're paying him $12M period. So this is probably GB fishing, trying to measure the risk.

I read on pft that the franchise tender would be around 9.7 mill for the year.
I'm pretty sure Green Bay is doing it just because they know that teams need a QB and they will get their first rounder out of it.

Maybe thats the whole "$2M less" than previous franchise tags were before the CBA? Because I heard just shy of $12M so that makes sense.

Agreed sounds stupid to me too but I suppose with their TE signed they can toy with the notion.

I think they will franchise him with the mutual understanding that he is to seek a trade. It would be a move just to ensure they get something in return. I don't think Flynn would sign the franchise tender because he wants to be a starter. It's not a commitment until he signs it, they merely need to leave the cap space available for it.
I am glad you got my not so subtle swipe at anyone who thinks franchising Chong Davis is smart. Not sure where you weighed in on that discussion, but I think such move would be incredibly moronic.

I agree with Keino, its a no brainer for GB to franchise Flynn and then seek tradeds. Even if they only get a 2nd rounder out of someone, its worth it. The risk of Flynn signing the tender before Green Bay released it is minimal

If they do franchise flynn a suddenly lost all my interest in him. I have a hard time believing anyone will pay that salary and a pick.

they dont have to pay the salary, they negotiate a better deal. most likely on the fa market flynn will get a 6 mill SB and 3 mill first year anyway so no loss for Flynn

Well if Green Bay pulls that off, that makes a lot of sense, although it would be pretty funny if no one picked him up and they got stuck with him.

if after a few weeks there is no movement they could rescind the tag if flynn does not sing. Most likely they will get something. Someone is desperate for a qb out there.

It's exactly what New England did with Matt Cassel.

However NE had a valid excuse due to Brady's injury. GB is simply tagging Flynn to try and deal him and unless I'm mistaken this is actual in violation of what teams are allowed to use the franchise tag for? The franchise tag is a joke and should've been abolished.
