[quote=shally;1443923]June Jones said he could play at nearly any weight from 300-350 without losing speed.. a very good athlete.. very strong..

if so, having a guy like that to anchor the line for years would be a very good thing for Griffin.

Montgomery is better IMHO at Center than Guard.. but he can play both and is a valuable player. Gettis is being touted as a very versatile player who could play C/G. Lichtensteiger has done that as well in the past. Even Cook has experience playing both Guard and Center (although he looks like he is going to be hard pressed just to make the team this year)

So, it seems like the plan is to create a line with multiple players who can slide from one position to another if needed..

I think LeRibeus and Morris are the two poor picks of the Skins draft--the former could have been had at a much lower round and the latter makes no sense. I hope I am wrong.

Aren't these the two players Wash drafted whom Shanahan saw first hand at the Senor Bowl? Does Shanahan have a tendency to "fall in love" at first sight? If these two guys don't turn out well, Shanahan should be forbidden to coach any more post-season college games.

Morris looks like a good prospect for a FB/3rdRB.

The Skins only have Helu and Royster back from last season. Hightower is still an FA. Why not use a 6th round pick on a guy that has potential to make the roster as a back-up?

I hope you are right and they aren't trying to use him as a "utility player". IMO a olineman drafted in the 3rd round should be a 16 game starter and should be focusing on the position he is suppose to man for the season.

Given where he was drafted the Skins obviously think he can be a starting guard. They must be hoping he can also help at center if injury presents a need.

June Jones said Leribeus was the first option at back up center for SMU and practiced it throughout his time there. So he isnt just being thrown out there to see without any experience at center. The more versatile the better depth we have as well. Aside from LG i think our starters our pretty much set on the Oline. Your opinion of a 3rd round olineman is just that and nothing more, your opinion. He may not be a starter out of the gate, but he should provide us with quality depth on the oline that we havent had in years and i wont complain about that...

A 3rd round olineman shouldn't be depth. He should be a starter. I will however be very impressed if we roll out 4 lineman on game day and leribeus can play center and guard at the same time Badass!!

IIRC a 3rd rounder has only a 30 or 40-something percent chance to pan out into an NFL player at all. So I think your expectation of 16 games in his first year is a bit lofty.

What is the percentage based on?

I am also interested in where you are getting that statistic. Is it in context? 30-40 % of olinemen or all players? At the top of the 3rd round or bottom?

Nevertheless, I believe when you pick an olineman at the top of the 3rd round, the expectation should be a starter. That type of pick isn't a luxury pick. Whether we meet that expectation is a different question.

3rd Rounders aren't usually just handed jobs. Leribeus will have a chance to compete at a couple of positions to earn his spot on the team. The guy will have to contribute on special teams as well. If he proves he deserves to start, then great. If he has to play a back up role at first then it doesn't mean its a bad pick, and its not all that much a horrible thing.

Some first rounders don't just get handed starting jobs and serve as backups or role/situational players. Doesn't mean they're bad players, they just need more time to develop at the NFL level and/or have a better player in front of them. So you tell me, why should a 3rd rounder of any position just be handed a starting job?

I absolutely never said or meant to imply that he should be handed a starting job. I said that when you pick up an offensive guard at the top of the 3rd round you do so with the expectation that he is a starter. Do you disagree with that?

We don't have the luxury to draft depth players, we need starters. Lichtensteiger was good last year, but he is coming off a major injury. We don't have one starting level guard and please don't tell me you think Chester was worthy of that role. My concern is that LeRibeus will have no chance of being a starter if he isn't allowed to concentrate on a single position. Is that not a reasonable concern?

i would say maybe with the expectation that he could possibly be a starter as a rookie and that he is a guy who will compete to be a starter but may not win the starting job right away.

also, leribeus was a starter in college at guard and also practiced at center.

I posted in another thread that if Morris is a really good pass-protection back who can also catch passes, then perhaps there is a spot for him on this roster as a 3rd down back.

But, if he is just another backup RB, I don't see any need for him. I certainly wouldn't use a draft pick on one--just sign one of these dime-a-dozen free agent RBs.

Shanahan has a long history of finding 1000 yard RBs in the draft. This is one area where I will trust him, regardless of whether or not I think it's smart. If we were talking about a TE, I'd be upset.

Homer McFanboy has a nice post about JL today:

---
Shanny:

Quote:
"It's hard to find a guy who can do both. What I mean by that, some times you find a guy that’s a Pro Bowl center, and you move him to guard, and he can’t play. And a lot of guards, they can't play center. They don't have the quickness. He's got both and that's one of the reasons why we had him targeted early."
---
Leribeus:

ON HIS STYLE OF PLAY

Quote:
"I'm explosive, aggressive and I'm definitely not one to finish a play early. They've been having me a play a lot more center, but I’ve gotten snaps at right guard, center and left guard so far. So I'm more of a swing guy with more of an emphasis on the center position."
ON OTAs

Quote:
"Like I said, I'm really trying to get down all of the techniques. We'll go over it with the offense, but obviously we're not as quick as the defensive line is right now. But even now, it's a lot faster once you really get after it. I figure after a few days we’ll get into a rhythm, but right now I'm just trying to get down all of the little differences between guard and center so I can be ready to go."
ON GRIFF

Quote:
"You wouldn’t expect it with the bright eyes and big smile, but he's really like a little mastermind. He knows what he's doing and I think he’s probably further ahead already than most of the other people here."
