Open Thread: Week 1 Redskins versus Saints
I wanted to start a thread on Week 1 regular season game versus the Saints.
As I sit down and think about this matchup, the first thing that pops into my mind is Brees & receiving core versus our defensive backfield. Makes you go
They chose Colston and brought in Grubbs, so the receiving core is very much intact , and they didn't skip a beat on the Oline, covering their loss REAL nice with the addition of Grubbs.
Our defensive backfield? Doesn't have a chance.
Can we generate a sufficient pass rush to get to Brees.
I know that OTA's aren't even here, but I don't see any major contribution coming our way that we are going to be able to stop the trainwreck known as Brees to even slow it down.
Key to this game for ourselves will be time of possession. We will need to keep the Saints O off the field long enough to have a chance at this game.
I honestly am thinking this is going to be a BLOWOUT for the Saints.
What does EVERYONE think are keys to the game, key matchups, and what factors we'll need to even stay in the game?
Comment away.

I think this thread is a wee bit premature. I would feel much better responding to this in about 2 1/2 months from now.
We have a new defensive backs coach and several new players to evaluate. They could be much better. Jarvis Jenkins is back, the DL and linebacking corps looks solid. The might possibly play quite well against Brees, and that's assuming that Brees gets signed.
Offensively, RGIII could play like a rookie, or he could light it up. I predict the Saints will try to come after him early and often. There is a chance that he could make the Saints pay for this by going deep early and often. Vilma and their DE is out.
With Sean Payton out, there may also be some coaching and communications breakdowns. The Saints could play a very sloppy game filled with miscues and penalties. At any rate - this is way too early to predict IMO.

One thing in RGIII's favour is the lack of game-film (college stuff excepted...) on him. The new coaching set-up in New Orleans has to help too - though I don't know how the NFL can stop Payton communicating with the temporary bods in charge...

If Payton is prohibited from any contact with the team, any evidence of armchair coaching might dig him a deeper hole, with further penalties and sanctions. Cell phone records, text messages, etc. would be pretty easy to trace - and I believe the investigative branch of the League office will be watching.
At any rate, If we are going to open our season against a tough opponent, I'm glad it's New Orleans. I would be far more worried about getting crushed if our opening game opponent was against a top-tier team that is not embroiled in controversy, like Green Bay.

Agreed. I'd prefer the Skins were opening against a weaker team (Tampa, St. Louis, Cleveland). But if we have to go on the road against one of the good teams on the schedule in Week 1, the Saints are a better option than the Steelers, Giants or Eagles.

I have no idea which Saints team will show up in week one. The odds say Brees will have a new contract and will start...but you never know how the team responds w/out their head coach. One thing we do know is that the crowd will be plenty hyped to show their support for the Saints. Remember the energy during their first home game after katrina? It won't be at that level, but my guess is that it will be still be loud and supportive. Not the best atmosphere for RG3's indoctrination to the NFL...

I want to wait and see what happens this summer. There are things mentioned already like OTA's, Camp, and Preseason...also there could be major injuries that happen (please not us) this summer or trades or the end of the world...so I will wait

Yup, and that's why this prediction thread is a wee bit premature. Just think, we are only 2 months away from training camp. Hopefully with 90 people arriving in camp, our training staff will be patient with Hankerson, Jarvis, Hightower, Lichtensteiner and anyone else who has a proven track record of performance. I would be careful with Minnifield as well, even though he is unproven. plenty of other folks to evaluate.

Saints seem to be slow starters a lot of the time..Because of the off season turmoil I dont think this is a bad time to be catching them

Yup its way too early to be prognisticating when we don't even have a final roster or performance feedback from preseason games. If we're just basing this off last year then we get crushed, but we also have no idea where New Orleans will be week 1 either.
I still get this funny feeling this thread will be 30+ pages by the time preseason even rolls around. My early prognistication on that is 10 pages will be about if we're rebuilding, another 10 about Rex humping Kyle, and 10 more about firing Shanahan
