Protecting Patrick Ramsey
Quote:

Although he wasn’t sacked in a Week 10 win over Seattle, QB Patrick Ramsey has been knocked down 69 times — 22 more than any other quarterback in the league — and sacked 26 times. Ramsey’s safety is a growing concern, especially because new backup QB Tim Hasselbeck is very green. Yet the team says there is no reason for the breakdown in protection. The team will not place blame solely on the line, and team insiders say it’s partially because it has invested so much money in OTs Chris Samuels and Jon Jansen and OG Randy Thomas. One clear source of trouble is the inability of any of the team’s backs to pick up the blitz in pass protection. In the preseason, the team released RB Kenny Watson — a Daniel Snyder move — who was the best blocking back the team had, and there has not been an adequate replacement. According to an NFC personnel director, newly signed RB John Simon will not help out in that area either; he says Simon’s best attribute is his pass-catching skills.

Johnson and Cartwright did fairly well on Sunday.

Last week was a test to see if we were still alive. We are: that's good. This week will be a test to see if Patrick will survive the season. The bad news about yesterday is that we confirmed what just about everyone knew was true. If you don't blitz us, we will move the ball on you. I wouldn't expect any D cord to not bring the heat early and often.
I'd like to see a split back offense with Bryan and Rock with 3 WR's. With our fullbacks in to block, at least they should be able to give Pat some time. It would be up to the players to make it work then.

Why not bring in an extra OL to replace the TE? In SS's offense, a TE is nothing more than a blocker.

Some teams have done that with either TEs or FBs. I think Spurrier needs to try it.

Why not just put up a big sign saying "WE ARE GONNA PASS!"

What, you can't have an extra o-lineman in on a running play?

Yeah, guards are fine as lead blockers too. Hell, that's what they do whenever they pull.

As much as I support Snyder, the Watson for McCullough thing still pisses me off.

This thread sounds like the title to a movie!

Did you see Green Bay use 6 offensive linemen yesterday on one play. We need to do that. The problem is, Spurrier won't like that there would only be two receivers running routes.

Put in Brandon Winey (6'-7"/315) as the extra blocker. He has some TE skills too.

I've been wondering about that guy! Has he got mad skills or what?

It doesn't have to be that way...
6 Linemen
1 Quarterback
1 Fullback/Runningback
3 Wide Receivers

I don't mind bringing in an extra lineman, but I think they should insert them in between the guard and tackles, keep our best pass blockers on the outside.
