Coach Worries

After hearing Coach Gibbs announce his list of assistant coaches... two things come to mind that have me a bit worried.

1. Too many Chiefs? I know this is a stark contrast to the regime under Spurrier, with very little NFL experience at all. But, do we have too much experience now? Seems the titles of Assistant HC given to Williams and Bugel are really just fancy Coordinator titles. What will the coordinators do then?

I trust Gibbs like the rest of us... but some of this is funny. Look at Bugel for instance... he has served as a Head Coach for several years after Gibbs left. Yet how will he feel not even calling the plays? Gregg Williams held the top job in Buffalo for 3 years... how will he adjust to working for someone else again? Don Breaux has the largest leap into a role which is labeled Offensive Coordinator, yet who knows what that means. Jack Burns is an ex-coordinator... now reduced to QB coach under some big names.

I know these guys mostly worked under Gibbs already... and his leadership is trememndous... but I hope some of these guys with hefty resumes dont mind taking a back seat.


2. This seems like a "make it, break it" coaching staff we have assembled here. Gibbs and co. have all had lusty careers (mostly with the Skins). If they blow it this time around, will it forever tarnish our history? Worse yet... what if they become a laughing stock in the NFL? Seems all the eggs are being placed in one big basket.

Well, remember Gibbs is trying to get people to forget about our glory past. Remember he said why he didn't wear his ring at his press conference because this is a new beginning and should not be tied to thes past. I thought that was a good way for him to handle things. What we did in the past is in the past. It's in the books already.

There will be an adjustment for several of the coaches who are now coordinators and position coaches but it has happened before. Turner went back to work as an OC after his head coaching job. There are several others as well. I believe but I may be wrong but I think Breaux sort of served as a pseudo OC under Gibbs in previous years so I don't think it is a really big jump for him.

The two big names Gibbs and Williams will be calling the shots. It's an interesting hierarchy but I believe it can work.

well, maybe williams will understand that he isnt head coaching material. there was a point that i thought buffalo would win the super bowl this season because they started off so dominating, but finished 6-10(sound familiar?).

Not worried at all. Gibbs has a plan (once again) and its probably something he learn in NASCAR, which he was (IS) very sucessful in. Alot of good minds coming together, a good mix of young and old, with alot to offer in experience. And two rookie coaches to throw in there - what a way to start your career in coaching. Couldn't think of a better place to be, under a great head master.

I also wondered about who would call the plays and if it's Gibbs and Willams then why give the other two guys Coord titles. I'm not worried about too may big named coaches though - I think that can only help our undisciplined team.

Coach Gibbs has inherited an undisciplined team!
In Basic Training there is a Head DI and lots of assistants DI’s who are specialists in what they do and teach. It is their job to motivate, train and correct bad habits while promoting excellent performance. They do this by working closely with everybody….

As we think we've determined in the other thread, the large amount of titles was used so that it would be harder for other teams to take away our coaches.

You also have to remember, Bugel, Burns, Breauz, Zampese, these guys all left the game, they only came back because of Joe Gibbs and ther desire to coach fro him once again. I dont expect Bugel think he would cvall plays. He came back "with" Joe Gibbs and "for" Joe Gibbs. He did nto come back as head coach.

My feeling is, despite all the lofty titles that are assigned for resume and ego purposes only, I am sure duties have been spelled out down to very minor specifics internally already. Everyone knows their role.

This is a highly experinces and professional staff. I like it, great mix, great experience, and I am psyched for 2004!

I don't know that any questions can/will be answered about this coaching staff until we get some mini camps under our belt. But I agree, what are the 2 assistant head coaches going to be doing if for example, Greg Blache is calling the defense and Gibbs is calling the plays?

Very interesting to see how all of this will play out.

The team needs a strong hand at every position, something they have not had. This is an excellent coaching staff. It does not guarantee success, but does make it far more likely.

Here's a question that's been on my mind, how many coaches are there usually? Gibbs is up to 19, isn't that a lot?

NE had 17, I heard so it isn't much more than NE and we see how that worked there.
