Let me be the FIRST!!!!!!
Let me be the FIRST to say this: If the San Diego Chargers are truly in the bidding for Mark Brunell and would be willing to give up a 2nd round pick for him and then pass over Manning with the 1st pick.............
This would actually exceed the stupidy of trading 2 years worth of draft picks for the rights to Ryan Leaf! This may actually exceed the stupidy of the Hershal Walker trade.
However, I don't believe it. Nobody is that stupid. I think this is somebody making something up to incrrease Brunells trade value.
NOBODY would give up a MANNING with the first pick in order to start a QB with a 2-3 year shelf life. They would have to literally be brain dead. This sounds like Marty trying to get back at Snyder.

Not only that San Diego would be known as the team that passed over BOTH Michael Vick and Eli Manning in a matter of 3 or 4 years. I don't think they can pass on Manning for that very reason.

I dunno Rick. Passing over a QB and solving a QB spot for the next foru years allows them to use that second pick on another much needed position or in their case, maybe even trade down and get multiple picks, which could address several glaring weaknesses. Things are not always so clean cut.

I didn't say it couldn't happen. Of course they could be that stupid. But Shaggy is right. Would they want to be known as the team that passed on Michael Vick, Manning, but the team that traded away 2 years worth of drafts just to get Ryan Leaf.
Of course it COULD happen. They might just be that stupid. But it still sounds like Marty screwing with Snyder.

Right now the Chargers are cheap and stupid. A very deadly combination if your running a football team.

You are speculating right now. Is Manning a sure fire NFL great? Most definitely not. You can't say that just because his brother and father were/are great, he will be too. Look at any 2 brothers in any pro sports. More times than not, one is great and one is mediocre. This isn't saying that it would be the case in this situation, but you sure can't say they would be stupid to pass on Manning. You said "This would actually exceed the stupidy of trading 2 years worth of draft picks for the rights to Ryan Leaf!". Ryan Leaf was most definitely just as heralded as Vick. Additionally, there is nothing to say that Manning won't be another Leaf. As of right now, the only thing he has that resembles his brother at all is the same last name.
And as to passing over Vick, you do realize who they picked, don't you? Here was the trade: Chargers have traded the No. 1 pick in the draft to Atlanta for the No. 5 pick in this year’s first round, a third round pick this year, a second-rounder in 2002 and WR Tim Dwight.
They picked LaDainian Tomlinson. At that time, they were starting Flutie, who they realized was pretty old, but he still had a few good years left. They MOST DEFINITELY needed an RB and guess what, they drafted one of the best in the NFL.
It would be smart for the Chargers to sign Brunell and trade the #1 down for more picks in order to meet much greater needs. There is no doubt about it.

Hey, just a reminder.
Please don't create new threads for topics that already have one. This could have been put in the other Brunell thread.
Thanks

actually, this makes perfect sense. marty is the coach. he has 1 year left. they cant win with a rookie qb starting. brunell is a veteran pro bowl proven qb that wont make mistakes. and the chargers can use their 1st pick on o line, like robert gallery, which makes sense cuz of marty and the sucky oline that lt2 runs behind, and still gains 1500yards

Again, being here in the San Diego area, the Chargers are getting heat from every direction.
They get all their sellouts from a ticket buying deal with the city...
They have made some horrendous personnel decisions...
Tomlinson is the franchise and they refuse to get an adequate line in front of him...
Ryan Leaf, Mike Vick...
Now, they don't know what to do with Brees.
It all starts up front on both sides of the ball. No line, no love.

Remember the Deal that SD made with the Falcons for Vick? They Got Brees and Tomlinson out of it. That was a decent Deal IMHO. Now, the Leaf over Manning Deal...Who saw that coming....not me. Lots of people would've chosen Leaf. Brees is still a decent QB. He just has no line in front of him. Look what Tomlinson does with no line in front of him. The biggest mistake the Chargers made was pulling Brees late in the year and Starting Flutie. They probably ruined Brees for good. That being said, I hope the get Brunnell!!!!!

They never had a chance at Manning.....no way Indianapolis was going to trade out of #1 and let him go.......San Diego shouldn't feel bad about drafting Leaf, there were alot of teams that would have taken him at #2.

People are still praising Vick for what, When he wins the Super bowl he would be worth more to SD than Tomlinson but not till then. Vick has done nothing yet in this league and that could be the team around him, but he needs to win before I say he is the "one"
